K-Meleon as an offline browser on a CD

Hi everybody!

I am a real fan of K-Meleon, but I don't really have much programming talents. As far as I use this program, I can only say: Thanks a lot! Never again M$!

Now I'm planning to do the following: I will release a multimedia CD for 100 pupils of our school. This CD will have a HTML menu with linked texts, videos, images and executables for Windows. I want to use K-Meleon as a HTML reader on this cD. In order to be able to use K-Meleon without the people who open the CD having to install it, I wanted to put some configured binaries on the CD that are started via autorun.

I now have two questions:

1. Is it possible to execute K-Meleon on a read-only disc without having any temp files on the harddisk drive?

2. How can I configure the MIME settings in a way, that all applications are started without a further question?

I hope you can help me - I'm just not willing to accept any internet explo*** solution!

hope to hear from you soon

Christian

Hi again,

I think you understood me wrong. I don't want to boot the CD. I want K-Meleon to start if you insert the CD into a PC running a Windows Environnement.
I have seen that the OpenCD team has done something like that, but still I couldn't get any information about how to load K-Meleon from CD or how to launch *.exe files without any dialogue interfering.

thanx for your help

Christian

The problem that really concerns me much is: How can I define that the profile directory is on the CD? (I mean: everybody has other drive names, don't they?) I can't simply put "D:\\k-meleon\\" - in that case half of the users wouldn't be able to open it correctly...

Are there any relative pathes I could use???

Yes I always understand wrong. sorry.

I would have looked into to the config files of those projects:

what I can use myself of their work done already.
and I merely suggested that You look there untill You have a better idea.
& sorry for my missunderstanding Your intentions

Hummm...The OpenCD project is rather big... and I just have managed to star K-Meleon from CD by using this method:

-----
I've made it! smiling smiley

K-meleon running from the CD, without HD interaction... here's how:

1- Grab KM, install to lets say C:\KM
2- make your own configuration. Options should be in C:\KM\profiles\default\xxxxxxx.slt\Pref.js
3- Copy this file to C:\KM\defaults\pref
4- Copy the C:\KM\profiles\default\xxxxxxx.slt\macro.cfg, C:\KM\profiles\default\xxxxxxx.slt\menu.cfg and C:\KM\profiles\default\xxxxxxx.slt\accel.cfg to the root folder of KM: C:\KM\
5- delete these 2 files:
C:\KM\components\profile.dll
C:\KM\components\profile.xpt
6- delete C:\KM\Profiles
7- delete C:\KM\defaults\profiles

You should now have a standalone K-Meleon browser that should run from a CD...
-----
What I needed to do of extra work:

- kill the first line of Pref.js
- delete any line that contained profiles in Pref.js

Now it runs quite smoothly.

Next thing is, that I don't get behind the MIME configs. I don't understand them at all. And I need to run the *.exe files...

Sorry for the confusion I am causing.

Bye

Christian

hi christian - how mime types are influenced is here:
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?f=1&i=15086&t=15086

no problem: confusion ,) - i write rather slow. & speak German better, lol.

p.s . perhaps:
to get good plugin collection install old netscape (4.8 seems nearly self contained) and copy plugins to k-m plugins dir. // else MSIE 5.5 before service pack two also uses Netscape pluggin type // how too check whether still present on scholl machine?

perhaps ask Admin at free cd project for known problems?
Selanit links to certain thread in free cd project, You checked there?
I only dimmly remember!

Christian,

More power to you. I anxiously await your finished product.

A CD-based KM would be delicious!

There is already a solution for that. It's just a bit difficult to deal with it...
Find it on http://www.theopencd.net/~baavgai/kit/index.html . You'll have to use the instructions given above and then use the modified *.dll's and launch.exe as a possibility to launch any file from K-Meleon without further questions.

I'm working on it.

Keep us informed and please let us know the outcome if you would Christian? I myself wouldn't be interested in opening KM from CD BUT I'd be fascinated in knowing how you did it, your solution, etc., and I imagine many others here would as well. That's if you don't mind?

Thanks mate and have fun!

À la prochaine,
