Serious concerns about the open approach

Running a site where anybody can change anything brings risks. While many contributors add useful notes and information, there can also be black sheep who annoy others or delete content in an attempt to bring some fun to their lives. Therefore courtesy and collaboration are necessary:

  • Respect others. Treat people how you want to be treated.
  • Be bold. We can revert problems.
  • Assume good faith until proven otherwise. Mistakes are common.
  • Resolve disputes by private messages or public discussions in the forum. Critique pages, but don't insult people.

Fixing errors

Viewing edit changes

To view the edit history of a page:

  1. Click the PageInfo link at the bottom of the page. This will show a list of all edits and previous versions of that page.
  2. Click the diff link on the version that you want to examine.
    • Added content will appear in green with + plus marks.
    • Removed content will appear in red with - minus signs.
  3. This shows the differences between that specific version and the version immediately prior. This is a quick way to spot spam insertion into a page. If you're trying to analyze a more complex edit, try the method below:

Comparing large edits

  1. Right-click the EditThisPage link at the bottom of the page.
  2. Select Open in Background Tab from the popup menu.
  3. Click the PageInfo link at the bottom of the page. This will show a list of all edits and previous versions of that page.
  4. Click the Fetchback link for a version of the page. This will open up the wiki's editor with the markup for that specific version of the page.
  5. You can compare the 2 documents manually or more easily with:
    • A Windows text comparison tool like the open-source WinMerge.
    • A web-based text comparison tool.

Restoring previous versions

  1. Click the PageInfo link at the bottom of the page. This will show a list of all edits and previous versions of that page.
  2. Click the Fetchback link for a version of the page. This will open up the wiki's editor with the markup for that specific version of the page.
  3. Click the Save button.
