K-Meleon

The Preference Dialog is a graphical interface to change settings in your K-Meleon profile. Changed settings are stored in the /Profiles/your.profile/prefs.js file. This is a standard text file that can be opened with any text editor. Preferences stored in the user.js file will override settings changed in the graphical interface.

Customize Preferences

To open the Preference Dialog:

  1. Launch K-Meleon.
  2. Go to Edit > Preferences (F2) or press F2.

You can also edit preferences by typing about:preferences into the address bar and pressing enter. This interface is very similar to the standard dialog.

Experienced users can manually view and edit preferences in the browser by typing about:config into the address bar, but about:config will allow you to change settings in a way that could damage your browser. On the about:config page, only the bold preferences have been modified; the rest are displaying the browser's default setting. Resetting a modified preference will revert back to the default. You can search for preferences using the box at the top of the page. You can also narrow the list using filtered URLs. For example, the URL about:config?filter=kmeleon.plugins.adblock.load would only show the preference indicating whether or not K-Meleon's built-in adblock was enabled. These filtered URLs can be helpful when helping others to diagnose an issue.

Restore Defaults

If you need to restore all preferences to their defaults but want to retain the rest of your profile:

  1. Close K-Meleon.
  2. Rename the K-Meleon/Profiles/your.profile/prefs.js file to create a backup. After the name is changed, K-Meleon will no longer be able to access the file.
  3. Restart K-Meleon. When it cannot locate the prefs.js file, it will create a new one from the default settings.
