K-Meleon

WARNING: Oracle no longer supports the Java plugin due to security issues. If you install the Java plugin please consider using K-Meleon's built-in privacy features to manage Java applications.

Java applets were once the most powerful way to create software for the web. K-Meleon (unlike common web browsers) can still run Java with the plugin. Java is a programming language that runs on many physical devices and operating systems. Sun Microsystems developed Java and were very influential in the growth of the internet. Oracle purchased Sun and still supports a range of Java-based software platforms. However, Oracle no longer supports the web-based Java plugin due to security vulnerabilities. Java has been largely replaced by HTML 5 but is still used on some websites, especially older pages.

You can check if you already have the Java plugin by going to the about:addons page and looking in the Plugins tab. To install the Java plugin:

  1. Download the Windows Offline Installation: https://www.java.com/en/download/windows_offline.jsp
  2. Run the installer; check any boxes about browser plugins.
  3. Restart K-Meleon.
  4. Type about:addons into the address bar.
  5. You should see 2 Java plugins with notes about their security vulnerabilities. You can activate and deactivate the plugins from this page.

After you install the plugin, you can use K-Meleon's privacy features to limit which pages can display Java content.
