A download manager is a computer program that downloads separate files from the Internet. This can be done with a browser, too, but a download manager provides greater efficiency and reliabilty. It should be able to recover already downloaded data from errors so that it would not be necessary to reload it. A common feature is splitting the file to be downloaded into more than one segments, which can be downloaded simultaneously, making better use of the available bandwidth. Download managers are also capable of collecting addreses of a large number of files, which they will download only later, perhaps at a scheduled time.

Open-source download managers for Windows include:

  • aria2 project: HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, BitTorrent?, Metalink
  • ConnectFusion? Download Accelerator: HTTP, HTTPS, FTP
  • Free Download Manager: HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, BitTorrent?, Metalink
  • Getleft: HTTP, FTP
  • TrueDownloader?: HTTP, FTP
  • wxDownload Fast: HTTP, FTP, Metalink
