Silent Install

Thanks again for K-meleon. I'm doing some http://unattended.msfn.org, and I have this question:

What are the command switches for installing K-meleon silently? Is an answer file necessary?

The only reference I found was that v0.6 had the capability.

hi marco - great work the silent xp cd project.

the command switches probably still work (i do not know anything about that part)

You generate a k-m that installs at any place by deleting Your used profiles folder.

a k-m without that folder can be copied to any place
- and only does what k-m always does at first start -
but does not need special attention before that.

which means to me: silently install by been copied from cd.

some of the privately k-m issued are like that already - maybe download Haos or Sebastians anbd have a look how they are prepared for shipment.
kind regards

That's the kind of silent I like best. I wasn't sure what exactly to delete. The last time I tried to make k-m work w/o install I deleted too much. This time you gave me a better clue, and it worked. But if you asked me exactly where all the user info is located, I wouldn't know.

Do I delete everything in profiles directory (subdirectory to k-m main)?

Do I delete only the default directory, and not pluginreg.dat and profiles.dat? (yes, just one user)

Do I instead delete the p8nv1jcs.slt directory under default?

What about the k-m\defaults\profile directory?... maybe I mistakenly killed that one last time.

I will be putting K-meleon and Opera on all my clients machines. Already on two machines in two households. Neither have IE, not a trace of it. Life is good.

not "defaults".. folder (that is where the new setup comes from)

but the folder Profiles/.containing /default... must be deleted completely for a k- m that is to setup itself new or repair itself.
(maybe himself? in my language he will repair or setup himself new when the complete folder is deleted - that is the easiest way to repair also)

hope I understood what You wanted to know.

(Profiles folder that is where the actual setups used now and adapted by the automatisms of setup is located - and that is causing fault messages whenanything in it points the wrong way.)

sorry that i did not check posts for long.

Basically, you should copy everything in the K-Meleon folder after you have installed it but *before* you run it the first time (i.e., before the Profiles\ directory is created). As simple as that. smiling smiley

Got it.

Also, if I understand correctly:
If you want some customizations to the GUI (move and lock toolbars) and custom paths to Opera bookmarks, etc., to go along to each new machine, you must overwrite:

...kmeleon\defaults\profile\pref.js

with the file

...kmeleon\Profiles\default\random-generated-foldername\pref.js

But, before you do, you must edit pref.js and take out all lines that reference the "random-generated-foldername"

Could be simpler, but I can't complain since Kmeleon is Kewl.

just kill = kmeleon\Profiles\...or as rmn put it - do not start the browser after install.

what he said will do - becuase it requires NO what do i do.....

official & Sebastians and other issues are installed in a way that you need for silent install cd.

just install k-m and zip without ever startig newly installed k-ms will do 4 U.

if You feel like testing, make a renamed backup - test, delete and copy backup back.

what You mentioned is somthing that people do to persuade k-m to do something right after install - that is done for new browser issues or to make a browser that starts with native language packs - it is more like preparing Your own browser issue.

i gave TOO much info - sorry i issued a browser together with some friends.
so:
You just repack the k-m after install
- never start it - it must be first started in the place.
where quiet cd placed/copied it back to hdd
it must b like a first start! - never start it before it is paced on quiet cd.
hope i made myself clear.

kind regards
