K-Meleon 0.9 Beta for TESTING
Posted by: Andrew
Date: October 13, 2004 02:36PM

A beta version of K-Meleon 0.9 is now available for testing. This is NOT a final release and is only intended for testing purposes. In order for us to provide the best possible version of K-Meleon, we need YOU to test this beta version as thoroughly as possible. Priorities for testing include:

* Normal browsing: Report anything that used to work in K-Meleon 0.8.2, but doesn't work in the new K-Meleon 0.9b.

* Macros: K-Meleon now comes with a huge collection of ready-made macros. Help us test them all thoroughly.

* Privacy plugin: A new plugin. Give it a strong work-out.

* Toolbars and menus: Most everything with toolbars and menus are changed but basicly they are still the same. Help us make sure that they both work okay no
matter what plugins you enable/disable.

* New skins: We are proposing using the Phoenity skin as the new default skin. Two versions are available for evaluation.

* Chrome-related items including cookie manager, password manager and Javascript console. Let us know if they display properly when used or if anything is
missing or not functioning properly.

* Downloading and downloading options. It is a known issue that automatic downloads always close after download.

* Anything that could possibly depend on the Windows version you use.

* SetDefault: A small tool (selected parts from the old installer) to set K-Meleon as your default browser.

It is critical that YOU report any bugs, questions or comments back to the developers list so that they can be evaluated and addressed. DO NOT download this build if you do not plan on providing any feedback. DO NOT provide feedback like "great job!" or "this sucks!".

Please report all bugs, questions and comments to the developers mailing list at kmeleon-dev@lists.sourceforge.net. Visit http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/kmeleon-dev first to subscribe and to read archived messages before posting.

Provide detailed reports on the bugs that you encountered or the questions that you have. Make sure to include the version of the operating system also. See this page for details on what kind of information that we want:

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?id=BugReportingGuidelines

Please install the beta in an empty directory. Do NOT install it over an existing build.

Your assistance is critical to ensuring that we release a quality browser. We appreciate your help!

Got the latest beta, and in testing it out, cannot scroll with the keyboard.
Was able to do this with 0.8.2 and the "Unofficial" builds.
Running WinXP SP1

I can scroll w/ keyboard, but only after placing mouse inside layer and depressing LH button. Annoying, but not fatal.

The scrolling issue has been passed along to the devs.

Well, I'm sure they have a good reason. No doubt there will be a new one in a day or two...or three. (The third 0.9b in a week?)

WarLord, if you really want the file for that build, you could break up your e-mail address and we'd send it to you.

I have made a new selfextracting exe from the latest beta as I am using it now.
No garantees, no support.
I don't know why the latest beta is removed from the developerslist and the forums so please use it for yourself, but realise yourself it is an unsupported unofficial build and you can have some problems with the build (stability, etc...)

Beta 2 is available for testing. Besides some bug fixes mentioned on the Bug check page, the only other changes are:

1)Layer Open & Close options (Choose where to open a new layer & Choose which layer to give focus after closing) available from the Layers menu and by right-clicking the Layer/Window buttons.

2)Continuous Reload

3)Bitmap images for context menus have been disabled in the default setup because of the unsightly misalignment problem created when they're active. Win9x users or those who don't mind the Zig-Zag look :-) can enable them via Tools-Advanced Preferences-Menus. Towards the bottom of the file remove the '#' to the left of the bmpmenu() entries.

4)Minor changes to Context menus.

jsnj, as before, I would like to use an appropriate name for beta 2. Is it an "official" build? (Whatever that is! :-) )

Or is it a release that could have somebody's name attached to it?

It is just so I can keep things straight in my folders. Thank you.

3)Bitmap images for context menus have been disabled in the default setup because of the unsightly misalignment problem created when they're active.

Is a fix for that in sight till 0.9 final?

Removing the icons (in the default setup) is a big step backwards. ;-(

BTW: View - Toolbars (- Status Bar) shows that as well (and it doesn't indicate whether it is on or off, but that is known and not caused by the bitmapped menus plugin).

I don't know if a fix is in sight. I was trying to find some consistency with the bug, but I couldn't. If you notice, when the bmpmenu is active, the misalignment doesn't exist in the ImageLink context menus for example. But I'm clueless as to why. Perhaps Ulf will look at it, but I'm sure that would be considered one of the non-essential fixes especially since the only other browser to offer them at default is Opera. None of the others do. An extension is needed for FF.

BTW, would most users prefer the bitmap images at default even with the misalignment? If so, we can change it back.

I already changed it back. The misalignment is not nice, but it is better then nothing in my opinion....

From what I remember it had to do with the context or the 'action' of the entry.

Mmh, but it's still a nice feature and especially useful with the many many new entries in the context menu. I still have trouble in finding what I'm looking for - too much stuff there. And I'll be totally lost if the icons, just like my old structure, are gone, too.

BTW, would most users prefer the bitmap images at default even with the misalignment? If so, we can change it back.

Can't speak for others but I prefer to have bitmapped menus & *context menus*.

I guess it is not possible to toggle them on/off with macros?

I like this release Wechselbalg. neat and nice. i tried 0.9...to me its not good as Wechselbalg.

problems i encountered

* when i open a new page in layer mode, task bar shows two widnows of km opened and slowly becomes one window.

* flash plugin problem - strangely it works nicely in Wechselbalg

I'm likely going back to Sebastian's Wechselbalg too. I'll give it a hard-surfing workout, and see if it crashes or not. All my 0.9s have crashed.
