I am a casual user of K-Meleon and stumbled upon Auto Switcher last week. It has worked wonders except for GMX.Com. It will not reset to whatever needs to be set so that I can get past "To take full advantage of GMX we recommend dowloading Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 3 or Safari 3"

Is this one where you just have to do a manual reset?

I modified C:\Program Files\K-Meleon\defaults\pref\I10n.js with the // Privacy info provided in 4td8s post dated March 21, 2010. Now, when I attempt to open GMX.Com /User Agent shows Firefox 3.5 but still get message from GMX that I need to "dowloading Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 3 or Safari 3."

I am using 1.5.3 if that makes a difference.

Perhaps they support no more gecko 1.8, and ask for 1.9. They can snif the real brother with other methods.

Try K-Meleon 1.6beta to see if it will work, but don't forget that it's only an alpha version.

By the way I have the impression you're not quite understanding what this switcher is all about, but it's quite easy really:
The menu you need is in Tools>Privacy>User Agent. There's also an entry to enable/disable the autoswitcher, so you can switch manually for testing something.

This User Agent string defines with which browser name and engine you identify yourself to a website, and depending on that info, a few websites change their scripts etc. You can manually test stubborn sites with different UA strings, before adding them to the automatic switcher list. For most websites it helps to fake as firefox2, because it has the same internal engine as KM1.5x, gecko 1.8.
But even so, some websites give you only a a rather new gecko 1.9 script, no matter which Firefox version or similar browser visits the site. Then it works only with a gecko 1.9 browser, like FF3 or KM 1.6! Sometimes with additionally claiming again to be FF3, sometimes with the default name.

If faking as Firefox 2, gmx at least doesn't show that warning, but otherwise I can't really test it without an account ;-) They DO say in their FAQ that FF2 is okay... But of course, with a FF3 string, they PERHAPS give only a "modern" script version from gecko 1.9, which would fail again on KM1.5x

You don't need an account to test it. Just go to GMX.com and the login screen has a message window at top of page that says "To take full advantage of GMX we recommend dowloading Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 3 or Safari 3." in red letters on pink background - misspelled word and all!

Upon further experimentation, if I disable Auto Switch and disable Auto Reset and select Firefox 2.0 then I can get in. Also I can get in with KM 1.5.3 without Auto Switch installed.

You are right about me not understanding everything that is going on - but if I had to understand everything I suppose I should be using IE.

Great, so simply add gmx.com to the autoswitcher list!
There is a menu entry to add domains per menu (Tools > Privacy > User Agent > ...)

there is no advantage in spoofing the ua with gmx other than visually removing the alert.
the additional features in gmx require gecko 1.9, spoofing as a wrong gecko(not necessarily firefox) will remove the alert but may break some of the functions as they will not work on 1.8

i understand the alert can be irritating to the eye, but a better way is to remove it using css and not changing your ua

go to edit>configuration>user defined styles(custom)

this will open usercontent.css in your notepad

add those lines:

Just a little note, the prefix is quite flexible, it only means "URL starts with". It can be shorter or longer as the domain name, as needed individually ;-)

Just an aside on autoswitcher. In the last month or so, it has failed on a couple of my financial sites, where it used to work. They no longer accept either the default K-Meleon user agent or the FF 2 substitute. What does continue to work everywhere is the SeaMonkey 1.1 user agent string. So I wonder if there is a way to modify auto switcher so that it calls up the SM string instead of the FF one?

Otherwise I could just set the string to SM all the time, but I'd rather not do that.

there are several ways to do that nick..but i wouldnt recommend because that'd mean all dumb websites will switch to seamonkey and seamonkey has sniffer problems on stupid sites just like kmeleon.. falls in the 'obscure' category according to obscure journalists so while it may fix the banking websites it will cause problems on other site.

try this to see if those financial websites will work with an opera string.. first if you hav e those sites listed in the badlist, please remove them first from the list..(tools>useragent>edit switch list) and delete their entries and save badlist.txt

after that..
go to the kmeleon\macros folder and look for a file called badlist2.txt .. this is sort of hidden supplement and not intended for editing so it's not included for editing in the macro. sites listed on the badlist2.txt will be switched to the special opera string (opera 10). that was a special measurement for myspace when it blocked firefox 2.0 as you'll see only myspace domains are in the badlist2

open badlist2.txt in notepad and add your bank websites in there e.g

bad list2 looks like this:
signups.myspace.com;myspace.com;www.myspace.com;login.myspace.com;register.myspace.com;js.myspace.com;b.myspace.com;www1.myspace.com;www2.myspace.com;secure.myspace.com;x.myspace.com

add you sites that don't work with firefox e.g

mybank.com;citicons.com;signups.myspace.com;myspace.com;www.myspace.com;login.myspace.com;register.myspace.com;js.myspace.com;b.myspace.com;www1.myspace.com;www2.myspace.com;secure.myspace.com;x.myspace.com

you can remove myspace domains if you want but it wont have any affect..just make sure to separate entries with a semicolon cause that's how the switcher macro read the sites.

save the file andsurf to the bank sites,the statusbar should indicate a switch to the opera agent..see if it's working properly with opera ua..most likely it will, if it doesnt right waway..reload the page sometimes it takes a refresh for the ua to kick in with the sniffer
