I figured out that when a resource of a link is secured and the webserver then send the browser the command to ask for a user id and password nothing is going to happen and the resources are not displayed.

Example: when a file is secured on a website (WNT and only user XYZ has read access) then the webserver will send a basic authentication command back to the browser and the browser will ask the user for a user name and password. Afterwards it is send back to the server which then returns the resource if the user name and password is authenticated and the user is authorized (in this example if it is user XYZ).
