The black background is a problem with the manifest file.
As for the not working accelerators, it's a gecko bug

There is a manifest embedded in the exe, which is the one causing problemn I think. You can remove it with reshacker.

One note, I don't know because you have problems with 1.6 exe and 1.9.0 Gecko.
Currently I'm testing 1.6 exe with Gecko 1.9.1 without this error:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1b3pre) Gecko K-Meleon/1.6preview

And i use this k-meleon.exe.manifest from 1.5.2, only changed version="1.6.0.0" but worked with original version="1.1.0.0":
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
<assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0">
<assemblyIdentity
    version="1.6.0.0"
    processorArchitecture="X86"
    name="K-Meleon"
    type="win32"
/>
<description>K-Meleon Browser</description>
<dependency>
    <dependentAssembly>
        <assemblyIdentity
            type="win32"
            name="Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls"
            version="6.0.0.0"
            processorArchitecture="X86"
            publicKeyToken="6595b64144ccf1df"
            language="*"
        />
    </dependentAssembly>
</dependency>
</assembly>

nope..never works with me desga. no matter what i do with the manifests either it displays errors or runs with bad icons.. i removed the internal manifest...same thing. it's no biggie, i'll be testing with bad icons, just wanted to ensure that everything was starting up fine with a proper manifest to rule out other more serious problems that might be due to the manifest.

also notable.. the default skin phoenity always displays its icon properly but not sites' favicons.

.. and most flash pages prevent 1.6exe from exiting from file>exit(it doesn't exit from close button in all cases).. and eventually causes a crash. so the safest way to exit after loading a flash page is by closing the tab first and then exiting

Looks like a problem of the latest exes (Dorian's & Hao's recompiled) not the plugin. :s

Recent & old plugin works with old 1.6.0.1 exe ( date stamp 10. August 2008 ).

mouse gestures plugin(1.5 and 1.6 versions) prevent normal exit

history plugin(1.6 version) may crash km when trying to access history features. and will immediately crash the browser when attempting to type in the url bar.

older hostory plugin from 1.5.2 doesn't cause any problems.

crash report plugin does not work
- on crash, km terminates without a windows notification as expected but the report dialog isn't triggered nor does it dump

the crash report plugin doesn't seem to work when accompanied with the new kplugins..that's all

when using old kplugins from 1.5.2, the crash report plugin works properly.
so maybe needs update
