I've had this problem with pidgin and last.fm. I go to open a link and Firefox 3 opens up. Poked down the in the registry everything associated as it should be.

In Windows Explorer I went to Tool>Folder Options>File Types.

URL:HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol)
URL:HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol) with Security System

These files are still associated with Fire Fox 3 still, and when opened use the following switches:

-requestPending -osint -url "%1"

It uses DDE and the following fields are filled in...

DDE Message:
"%1",,0,0,,,,

Application:
Firefox

DDE Application Not Running:
[Empty]

I'm gonna go research this more...

I filled the "Application used to preform action" with:
"C:\Program Files\K-Meleon\K-Meleon.exe" "%1"

and unchecked DDE. Links from other applactions open up in K-Meleon now. The DDE box got automatically filled in. Hope this helps someone and gets added to the setup assistant.

I apologize for not scanning the first page. I made a b line to the search engine using the terms "default browser" and didn't turn up immediate result. I updated the FAQ page as can bee seen here.

Uncheck use dde, and it will be ok
