NS bookmarks not recognized

Using Version 0.6 build 547 on Windows 95
(MS Common Controls update 50comupd.exe has been installed.)

My system has both IE and NS 3.0 installed (don't ask!).

Can't seem to get K-Melion to recognize Netscape bookmark file, or load bookmark function.
First tried installing with IE Favorites plugin disabled.
Uninstalled, then reinstalled with it enabled.
On reinstall, IE favorites files diplayed as choices under the "Go" menu.
Disabled IE Favorites plugin in preferences window,
then restarted K-Melion. This time, no preferences _or_ bookmarks.

Didn't get the "Want to Import Netscape Bookmarks?" message referred to in the FAQ list on either install.

Tried these after 2nd install:

Copied existing bookmark file to folder
C:\Program Files\K-Melion\Profiles\default\zyp1giy2.slt

There was no bookmarkFile line in the preferences file, so I added:
user_pref("kmelion.bookmarks.bookmarkFile", "C:\\Program Files\\K-Melion\\Profiles\\default\\zyp1giy2.slt\\bookmark.htm");
(Question: Is this case-sensitive?)

The line:
user_pref("kmeleon.plugins.bookmarks.load", true);
_was_ already there.

Saved, and rbooted, and restarted. Still no bookmarks.

Menu Bar has the following menus: File - Edit - View - Go - Help
One of the posts mentioned below indicates there's supposed to be a
"Bookmarks" menu(?)--- don't have one. The items under "Go" are:
Back - Forward - separator - Home Page - Search - separator - <history>.

Plugins tab of the Preferences screen shows:
Macro Extension, IE Favorites (disabled), Toolbar Control, Rebar Menu,
History, and Fullscreen. (Note there's no Bookmarks plugin.)

C:\Program Files\K-Melion\kplugins folder contains:
bmpmenu.dll, bookmarks.dll, favorites.dll, fullscreen.dll, history,dll,
macros.dll, rebarmenu.dll, and toolbars.dll (8 files).

There are a couple of threads on the "General" forum about this:
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?f=1&i=1316&t=1316
(especially Rob's 11/10 4:54 post-- he has the same menu problem)
and http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?f=1&i=1379&t=1379
(YA instance).

Okay, further developments...
Fixed spelling errors in added line ("kmeleon" and "K-meleon", duh). I did them one at a time (it's late) and the first one (in string "user_pref("kmeleon.bookmarks...") had to be done in Notepad because the preference window wouldn't save it (another bug?). After I got that one changed I found the second (in "C:\\Program Files\\K-Melion\\..."), and _that one_ did save successfully.
Anyhow, with the spelling fixed: exit, reboot, restart... still no bookmarks.

Also, the "about:plugins" page comes up blank, and the "icons in menus" aren't there.

Hope this helps. Good night!

Grouch,

Did you enable the bookmarks plugin when you installed K-Meleon?

Yes, both times.

Does the bitmapped menus plugin work for you?

If not, your system is probably missing msvcp60.dll. This is not an intentional requirement, and will be fixed for the next release. In the meantime, I'll probably relese a build of these plugins without this requirement in the next few days.

> Does the bitmapped menus plugin work for you?
No, and it doesn't appear on the plugin list of the Preferences->Plugins screen.
You're right about me not having the msvcp60.dll. I'll see if I can scare up a copy and try reinstalling.
BTW, have been using K-Melion exclusively since the 11th and am most impressed. Props to all involved!

Scary.
When I do about:pluins, I get the list of installed plugins for Mozilla!!!!!
Is there interaction with Moz?
Could K-meleon destroy my Moz setup?

Anyway, bookmarks don't work in 0.6.

Bernard,

Yes, it will recognize your Mozilla plugins. Remember, it is based on Mozilla.

You can just copy over your Mozilla plugins into K-Meleon's plugin directory if you have any concerns.

Andrew Thank you,

But what scared me is, that I have no plugins in K-meleon's plugin directory except the default one and when typing about:plugins, it displayed the installed plugins, which are physically in the Mozilla directory structure, not the K-meleon directory structure.

And what more scary is, while browsing with K-meleon and having a need for java, acrobat rdr, realplayer, it actually works, while I still have no plugins in K-meleon's plugin directory.

How does K-meleon find these?
Is this a normal behavior?
What if I uninstall Mozilla?

Although K-meleom is based upon the Mozilla development, I think it should stay in it's own working environment unless told to go somewhere else for plugin's f.e.

What about the NS bookmarks?
This doen't work at all. I see a lot of post's about this.
Solution in a next release?

I have no idea what's up with the bookmarks, they work 100% perfect for me. I cannot fix them unless they are broken for me.

Brian I don't know if you respond to my message.

It is very unclear for me what the structure of the project is, who is working on development/support etc..
It's a pitty, as K-meleon has every reason to get high focus. It's quick in rendering and it's configurable. Two strong points for success.

A lot of people have problems with bookmarks (as well as other issues) and need guidance how to diagnose this problem, even if it works on another person's machine.

In my opion, responsable support/development people should be able to give this guidance, even if it's not easy.

I'll follow for a while these forums to see if somthing comes up on this.

Bernard,

Here's the structure:

Brian and Jeff do the coding and development. I help out with documentation. Lele is handling the resource section. We all try to answer questions and we get help from people like Po, Scratch and others who are familiar with K-Meleon. Remember, this is an Open Source project that people are doing on their free time.We try to answer questions as best we can, when we have time. This isn't some big corporate operation with dollars. Free product, free support. Sometimes its only as good as you paid for it.
:-)

The bookmarks have pretty limited functionality at this point. We are aware of the limitations. There's not much we can tell you to do because Bookmarks and Favorites still need a lot of development work. We do appreciate the feedback. We ask for your patience on this area. Not that long ago, the browser was stil pretty rough and look how far it has come. The same will happen with Bookmarks, etc.

Re: Mozilla plugins. Mozilla scans your system for plugins and uses what it finds. Since K-Meleon is using the embedded Mozilla, it will do the same. If it didn't do this, you would have to recopy ALL of your plugins into K-Meleon. I don't think most users want to have to do that step.

Andrew,

Thank you for the explanation. It is appreciated.
Maybe for newcomers like me, it would have been easier to recognize the people working on the K-meleon project if they would have signed like Andrew, K-meleon project or something like this.

Well I know now.

So I will have a bit more patience for the bookmarks thing. For some people it seems to work for others (like me) not at all. Still strange.

Thanks for the explanation about the way Mozilla searches for plugins. I didn't know.
So K-meleon's behavior is normal. Good to know.

I hope the project will be succesfull as you have found a way to have a user interface that is quicker and rendering the pages is faster also compared to NS 6 and Mozilla.
