Absolute paths in profiles.dat and pluginreg.dat -- also, "$appdata"?

Topic 1: I'm having some trouble getting K-Meleon to run properly from a CD. Even if you specify the -profilesDir and -P name, K-Meleon reads absolute paths from profiles.dat and pluginreg.dat in APPDIR\Profiles -- and if the absolute paths in those files don't match the paths specified on the command line, things break. There's a "No Menu" error, and it apparently doesn't find its profile. What can be done about this?

Topic 2: What's this "$appdata" option? According to the K-Meleon manual's command line reference, you can use -profilesDir either with a directory name OR with "$appdata". But it doesn't specify what "$appdata" is. Could this be some way of feeding K-Meleon a profile without making reference to an actual file at all? If so, that could very well be the answer to our problem.
