id love to mess around with this code.. maybe make my own version thats a little less IE-like
You can grab it off the cvs server. That code is actually more recent than the 2.1 code.
You don't have to worry about the IE-ness, the final version will be very customizable. I just finished adding plugin support for menus and rebars. The code for favorites loading is actually in a seperate dll, so you can create a netscape bookmark plugin to replace the IE one.
