Can I download at a later time 1.6 beta and still run k-melon 1.5?
Yes. Unlike some other browsers each K-Meleon version can be installed & started independently without such fuss as You have with e.g. Firefox (where You have to work around to start different versions).

however i don't want to uninstall 1.5.I can't get an handle on how 1.6 is doing
Like said before, install 1.6beta2 in a new folder with an unique name.
That does the trick.
Cave if You use the installer. It offers to install on top of the previous install ( which would damage/overwrite Your K-Meleon 1.5.4 ) - change the install folder to say:
C:\program files\k-meleon1.6beta2.en-US\
It is best to install each version under its precise name when You want to test several versions.
The rest is unproblematic.
All K-Meleon versions 1.5.x and 1.6x can use the same profile folder without any trouble. I'd create a backup of the profiles before doing it, though. For this setup with shared profiles You only have to make sure that all the skins folders contain the same skins.
If You create/use independent profiles for the different versions (like suggested by JamesD, do not forget to grant writing privileges in/to K-Meleon folder with this setup).
For independent profiles You can create the desktop shortcuts like:
C:\.k-meleon1.6beta2.en-US\k-meleon.exe -new
C:\K-Meleon1.5.4en-US\k-meleon.exe -new
That lets You start/use both/multiple versions during the same time - if You want.
