Reader (Safari) for K-meleon?

Is it possible to have something like the Reader feature in Safari to be placed into K-meleon? It's great for reading news articles online

Thanks

Hi,

seems to be similar (but, of course, very much better than .. ;-) [/irony]) the Readability or Tidyread extensions to be found here

Cheers

Reader feature in Safari

Right click on the Mail icon and chose Read RSS. You will find Macro extensions like Add RSS and the alternative MicroRSS by Snuzz on K-Meleon extension pages, via Extensions Forum.

No, the Safari Reader depends on the Safari html engine.

Hi, guenter,

though I AM good for a major blunder now an then (see here), I'm quite sure this time.

Maybe you want to read this:
Safari Reader used code from Readability??

@ Vincent Lin: I use Readability as a Bookmarklet that needs the "hotlink" macro to be active. See my post here, about using a Hotlinks Toolbar.

You do not necessarily have to use the toolbar, though - read that anyway, even if you plan to invoke the bookmarklet by Ctrl - Number.

The code to paste to the hotlink in F2 -> Browsing -> Hotlinks is:
javascriptsad smileyfunction(){readStyle='style-ebook';readSize='size-large';readMargin='margin-extra narrow';_readability_script=document.createElement('SCRIPT');_readability_script.type='text/javascript';_readability_script.src='http://lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability/js/readability.js?x='+(Math.random());document.getElementsByTagName('head'winking smiley[0].appendChild(_readability_script);_readability_css=document.createElement('LINK');_readability_css.rel='stylesheet';_readability_css.href='http://lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability/css/readability.css';_readability_css.type='text/css';_readability_css.media='screen';document.getElementsByTagName('head'winking smiley[0].appendChild(_readability_css);_readability_print_css=document.createElement('LINK');_readability_print_css.rel='stylesheet';_readability_print_css.href='http://lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability/css/readability-print.css';_readability_print_css.media='print';_readability_print_css.type='text/css';document.getElementsByTagName('head'winking smiley[0].appendChild(_readability_print_css);})();
If you see a smiley right after "javascript", replace it by a colon followed by a left parenthesis.

The "readStyle='style-ebook';readSize='size-large';readMargin='margin-extra narrow'" items can be changed to some different settings - see on their site.

Cheers

Thanks SoerenB, I tried your javascript and couldn't get it to work. I enabled the hotlink macro and in the first entry within the F2 -> Browsing -> Hotlinks, I place your js code:

javascript: (function(){readStyle='style-ebook';readSize='size-large';readMargin='margin-extra narrow';_readability_script=document.createElement('SCRIPT');_readability_script.type='text/javascript';_readability_script.src='http://lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability/js/readability.js?x='+(Math.random());document.getElementsByTagName('head'winking smiley[0].appendChild(_readability_script);_readability_css=document.createElement('LINK');_readability_css.rel='stylesheet';_readability_css.href='http://lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability/css/readability.css';_readability_css.type='text/css';_readability_css.media='screen';document.getElementsByTagName('head'winking smiley[0].appendChild(_readability_css);_readability_print_css=document.createElement('LINK');_readability_print_css.rel='stylesheet';_readability_print_css.href='http://lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability/css/readability-print.css';_readability_print_css.media='print';_readability_print_css.type='text/css';document.getElementsByTagName('head'winking smiley[0].appendChild(_readability_print_css);})();

Pressing ctrl+0 did nothing. If I checked the "In a new tab" checkbox, the browser will open a blank tab

desga2, Reader is a new feature of Safari 5. You can see it in action here: http://www.apple.com/safari/whats-new.html#reader

It somehow extracts the main section of a page and present it in a very paper like manner. A great feature to have when reading news articles online

I'm really sorry, your script did work, just takes awhile for the page to load. Thanks a lot.

It would be nice if it's a built-in feature though.

Hi, Vincent,

all thanks should go to Readability.
You can find out about those style options there, too.
I'm glad it works for you now!

Thx SoerenB for correcting me. I thought Vincent ment the RSS reader itself.

It's easier if you just install the extension.

Is there anyway to make an offline version of http://readable-app.appspot.com/ ?
The stupid chinese government blocked the appspot.com site.

I downloaded the scripts and css from the site, but not sure how to make them work.

Thanks in advance

desga2,

This from the apple site:

"Safari Reader

Safari Reader removes annoying ads and other visual distractions from online articles. So you get the whole story and nothing but the story. It works like this: As you browse the web, Safari detects if you’re on a web page with an article. Click the Reader icon in the Smart Address Field, and the article appears instantly in one continuous, clutter-free view. You see every page of the article — whether two or twenty. Onscreen controls let you email, print, and zoom. Change the size of the text, and Safari remembers it the next time you view an article in Safari Reader."
