Here is a post I found on Gramps forums, and to which I answer:

Have a look to MultiSystem.

It allows to boot with a lot of OS (on the same usb drive)

The program exists for Linux and Windows. A very nice program.

I'm also looking for a Linux distribution on USB flash drive to replace WinXP on my Compaq Presario 1720US laptop ( P3mobile, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB hard drive ). I'd be a Linux noob so any recommendations on which USB installed Linux distribution will be appreciated. More than 1 distro is ok, I'm trying to get a taste for the different 'flavors'.

Hum, even Linux uses less resources than Windows, it's a tricky config.
I think principally of the memory amount.

But some builds could work correctly, it just depends of your need.
For the Ubuntu galaxy I know better, I can tell that the better builds for tricky config are Lubuntu or Xubuntu. Perhaps, but I'm not really sure Ubuntu with gnome shell and selecting gnome without desktop effects. It's what I use, but I don't remember the name.

I know there is a few other builds which can works, but I don't remember which.

Perhaps some other guys can help.

wintired, if you need to keep your data after reboot on your USB (persistent option), try Puppy Linux, Porteus, Slax, AlphaOS, Kanotix, Knoppix, ...

If you need only lightweight Live Distros, look here for more:

or here:

You can also one or more I gave, just installed on an bootable USB using MultiSystem, which allow to have more than one bootable OS, and allows too to keep installed programs and configuration of one or more OSes. I just use it to install or be able to boot the system I need, not for permanent purpose, but it's easily possible with MultiSystem.

Multisystem has persistance option, but not for all OS ...

"... MultiSystem is not only suitable for testing different distributions, but you can also, in some Linux distributions enable the "persistent mode." This allows it to use the stick as a multi-boot system, and the changes performed by the user are saved and available at the next start of the system..."

Seems not only MS but also reactos.org is counting down.

They seem to be close to a beta or maybe more?

What is reactos?

I cannot go to http://www.reactos.org/ru/node/785 from Germany.

They have gone among the halfwits that "cleverly" redirect You to the URL of
Your IP or Your first accept language. I hate this custom that is used mostly
by US companies and sites.

I can only read the English page. I already knew.

p.s. Their announcement seems hot air = American style. Vapor ware.

@ guenter,

I can't also, but searching about download, I found these pages :

https://www.reactos.org/wiki/Welcome_to_the_ReactOS_Development_Wiki

https://www.reactos.org/wiki/RosBuild where you can find the pages to download trunk builds.

I have been able to download 0.3.16 verzsion, but I put it on a multi-system usb, but it failed to load, and I see later it was a boot iso, not a live cd iso.

I'm downloading last live cd to try ...

Have no idea about announcement... It's from their forum h ttp://www.reactos.org/forum/
It seems not a little work needed for a stable system running... So.., linux distros then? (for the net) Xp works more then ok... But software developers driven by the IDE and most of them sit on the VC anyway.

IMHO yes on both. A lot of works to go for reactos.

& MS will soon issue SDKs and VC updates that do not support XP anymore.

VC 10 which is used for e.g. Mozilla.org's GRE offers new features and already leaves Win2000 and earlier in the cold. It offers cool new wizards for the devs.

Soon there will be even never VC versions offering yet more that exclude XP.

Microsoft is a Janus with two faces. They offer the free VC Express versions of their developer suites and free SDKs that help to cut the cost to free, hobby software development. And at the same time bar the less fortunate of their old clients who cannot buy new machines with OSes from them from support and free software.

Yeah, that's about it... mikos stop developing xp about 10(?) years ago. And the only reason that they was printing security updates cos deal with banks (bankomat systems, etc...) and not cos they want to support the users, of course.
Anyway, it's nice to see open source nt system live and growing.

i. remain hopeful You will become very, very, very, very, ...∞ busy with aiding consumer install k-meleon on linux distributions. smiling smiley

multisystem is superior. [please edit or delete my posted alternates if it impair Your course for users to have k-meleon on _ubuntu.] In contemplation of a switch from Windows users need no attention to persistence when quickly trialing the many choices as doing simple determination of like / or dislike. the usb is good method to experience the possibilities. merely find os preferred. (hundreds exciting choices! with innumerable combination of desktop environment; thousands of software packages. user like wintired and anyone with no prior exposure to linux will be impressed!)

furnishing a os on a thumb drive is a goal to include multiple operators where few machines is available. nothing is better for this than GNU/linux. This makes linux very, very important to bring computer to persons and places where not previously available. ( at a fantastic price! ) [here i. be avoiding discussion of eufi-boot] A personal portable os like this when used alternately on a xp machine each system may complement other, xp non-networked let linux do networking, can make the machine a powerful tool, but precludes use k-meleon. [unless You tell us that wine can run on the portable drive?] Within comfort to replace windows with a new found os, install the chosen os on hdd, pursuant donate the thumb drive os to someone. With os installed(mounted) to local drive a user now can rechercher their ultimate computer by go to jujuland.

dilemma k-meleon for windows or the linux. Generally users switching to a linux will not use a cross-over (wine.) That result is consumer lost to k-meleon. Apparently at once the quest for interoperability is paused currently same moment the time-line for rewrite, improve, update any and all systems is quickened. Use of a cross-over is becoming less necessary as users shift from rich-client to thin-client, as repositories expand and update, as windows software programs diminish fewer variety, as the future more important emphasis is place on browser implementation, printing, and shared network storage (cloud) this makes the central browser Very, Very important. K-meleon is best browser.

The simplest path to using k-meleon is on Windows os.

The path to a ultimate computer using k-meleon is go to jujuland.

Wishing k-meleon for everyone. Respectueusement ___i. ri. 8-|

For Android, I don't know, but I suppose that for MacIntosh, there are also products such VmWare or Virtualbox.

Not sure, but it's the only reasonable reason.

Use Omas apple for downloads, because we are metered.
The UIDrSID or browser id thingie,,, what does that identifier string look like to sf statistics when using a Handyphone as modem?
Attempting to avoid brand names here ,,, shared connections/networks/cloud. [brand]back-up-plus portable, airdroid, nas devices[these linux on arm!] many easily share amongst all os.
Suppose there is offset of multiple installations per one download corresponding for each download discarded unused?
