I'm also looking for a Linux distribution on USB flash drive to replace WinXP on my Compaq Presario 1720US laptop ( P3mobile, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB hard drive ). I'd be a Linux noob so any recommendations on which USB installed Linux distribution will be appreciated. More than 1 distro is ok, I'm trying to get a taste for the different 'flavors'.
Hum, even Linux uses less resources than Windows, it's a tricky config.
I think principally of the memory amount.
But some builds could work correctly, it just depends of your need.
For the Ubuntu galaxy I know better, I can tell that the better builds for tricky config are Lubuntu or Xubuntu. Perhaps, but I'm not really sure Ubuntu with gnome shell and selecting gnome without desktop effects. It's what I use, but I don't remember the name.
I know there is a few other builds which can works, but I don't remember which.
Perhaps some other guys can help.

wintired, if you need to keep your data after reboot on your USB (persistent option), try Puppy Linux, Porteus, Slax, AlphaOS, Kanotix, Knoppix, ...

You can also one or more I gave, just installed on an bootable USB using MultiSystem, which allow to have more than one bootable OS, and allows too to keep installed programs and configuration of one or more OSes. I just use it to install or be able to boot the system I need, not for permanent purpose, but it's easily possible with MultiSystem.

Multisystem has persistance option, but not for all OS ...

It seems not a little work needed for a stable system running... So.., linux distros then? (for the net) Xp works more then ok... But software developers driven by the IDE and most of them sit on the VC anyway.
IMHO yes on both. A lot of works to go for reactos.
& MS will soon issue SDKs and VC updates that do not support XP anymore.
VC 10 which is used for e.g. Mozilla.org's GRE offers new features and already leaves Win2000 and earlier in the cold. It offers cool new wizards for the devs.
Soon there will be even never VC versions offering yet more that exclude XP.
Microsoft is a Janus with two faces. They offer the free VC Express versions of their developer suites and free SDKs that help to cut the cost to free, hobby software development. And at the same time bar the less fortunate of their old clients who cannot buy new machines with OSes from them from support and free software.

Yeah, that's about it... mikos stop developing xp about 10(?) years ago. And the only reason that they was printing security updates cos deal with banks (bankomat systems, etc...) and not cos they want to support the users, of course.

For Android, I don't know, but I suppose that for MacIntosh, there are also products such VmWare or Virtualbox.
Not sure, but it's the only reasonable reason.

AFAIR disrupted used km with BSD & wine.
But why are Androids and Macinstoshs downloading?

For Android, I don't know, but I suppose that for MacIntosh, there are also products such VmWare or Virtualbox.
Not sure, but it's the only reasonable reason.

Welcome non windows downloads. Are these reasons?

mac download for linux friend.
Use Omas apple for downloads, because we are metered.
The UIDrSID or browser id thingie,,, what does that identifier string look like to sf statistics when using a Handyphone as modem?
