Safely staying with XP?

I will stay with XP until pigs fly. surprised smiley

My main protections are:

1- I image my C drive every 2 days, & retain images at least 2 months FIFO. (If I ever get infected, I will simply restore a clean image and POOF! it's yesterday. Or last week. Or whatever day preceeded the infection.)

2- I surf the net with my browser protected by Malwarebytes Anti-exploit (MBAE). In fact, all of my internet-facing apps are protected by MBAE (email client, FTP client, etc).

3- In realtime, I run AppGuard, plus an anti-executable, plus Kerio firewall. (Although I do NOT run an antivirus in realtime, I do use Avast AV on-demand, to scan all downloads.)

==>IMO - - - Of the above protections, the imager is by far the most important!

I hope that they will soon (fly, that is). Creators of Ubuntu are as shady as Microsoft if not even more.

You should really at least consider switching to Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.

Don't think so, even I don't like last Ubuntu builds (unity, ....)
For now, I keep 12.04 which rolls fine with my old config.
After that, I will probably use xubuntu.

These builds are also officials builds made by Ubuntu, but user interfaces are lighter (for xubuntu, lubuntu or also a little for ubuntu-gnome)

But my purpose was not exactly what you seem to understand.

I was just comparing all the security tools needed to make XP (and more generally Windows) to be able to run without to much pain ...

Hark! Me thinks me hear the distant flapping of a boared sow. mad smiley

I have a Linux flavor on my computer (Mint flavored) for use when I favor cyber flagellation.

However, where's the challenge in Linux? Everyone says that users of XP are doomed to be hacked & obliterated. Shazam -- it's Y2K all over again.surprised smiley

I refuse to surrender use of XP for much the same reasons that an occasional shark sighting won't make me forsake swimming in the ocean.

(We who are about to die salute you.)

As there is a majority of users who use Windows, the Linux users will be quiet ... for a long time.

The hackers always prefer Windows which is a real stainer ...

I read about an unofficial beta sp4 update from harkaz, but would rather wait to hear how good it could be and safe to try?

Guess it is based on updates by Microsoft.

MS is still updating the XP code but not for the consumer line.

German post service pack 3 updates to May 2014 exist and are for download at Winfuture board. http://winfuture.de/downloadvorschalt,2136.html

You could probably use them as example for Your own or to compare with harkaz.
