OTHER THAN by selecting from the right-click menu, is there any way to cause all links to open in a tab in the background?

In other words, when I middle-click on a link (so as to open it in a new tab) I do NOT want the focus to switch to the new tab. Instead, I want the focus to remain on the current tab. Is there a way to achieve this?

Tools - Mouse Accel - Choose any other than Default.

I chose Firefox in the Mouse Accel drop-down menu. It did the job!
