Thanks for making KM for Linux.

I tried making it work on Linux Ubuntu but it close after a few seconds... it seems after trying to access any website. I followed the instruction (adding the msv* files, etc.) and have made other software work with wine. I also tried renaming the profile.ini file... but same result.

BTW, it does the same thing in Vista. Is there a fix for this?

I am able to make the K-Meleon1.5.3-Linux-18122 version work (i.e. it might be a simple fix) but would love the faster and smaller K-Meleon-NX-18122.

Also, I fount that in the 1.5.3 version, the scroll down arrow in menus do not work either in the tool bars (when the get shortened because too long for the window... and a small arrow appears on the right to access the rest of the menu) or in web pages themselves.

I am trying again KM-NX-18122 from Ubuntu 8.10
and had no problems.
I am writing this post from Ubuntu using KMNX18122.
Where did you put KMNX18122 ?
It should be in a folder, where you have as user
rights to write and execute, for example your
Home folder as ubuntu.
It is also preferable to rename profile.ini to profile.ini2
before the first start of the browser.
This would create the KM profile inside the
folder ".wine".
If you have already a profile inside the K-Meleon
root folder from earlier trials, delete it before
restarting after renaming profile.ini to profile.ini2 .
If this still should not work, go to the folder components
and delete there the two files compreg.dat and xpti.dat .
Restarting the browser would create these two files anew.
If you would prefer to have KMNX18122 inside for
example the folder /opt , give before that folder
rights to read, write and execute for the user ubuntu,
or whatever your personal user name would be.
To do that, open a terminal
To become root, type :
sudo su
To give the rights to /opt, for example, type :
chown -R ubuntu:root /opt
chmod -R 775 /opt
This would give the necessary rights to the
user ubuntu for /opt, and all its subfolders and files.
If necessary, adapt it to your user name or to an other
folder, where you want to have K-Meleon.
I hope that you'll succeed.
In Vista, there should be no problem.
If necessary, start KMNX18122 after installing
in Vista once as the administrator, after changing
to the administrator account.
It should then be able to get to the internet in the
user account as well.
When using K-Meleon-Linux-18122 , you should consider,
that this is only an adapted variation for Linux,
where there are some little flaws, that have not been
or sometimes even can not be corrected, as it would be
in an official version.

Tried & failed, but narrowed down the problem. It does not work in Vista. That is the real problem. If it did, I could get it to work in Xubuntu 9.04.

The moment it accesses a web page, it shuts down. By deleting the readme.html file in KM's folder, I was able to open it (in Xubuntu) and even go into the preferences menu. But when I try any website, the moment it accesses it, it shuts down.

Any solutions?

I tried again this time with Xubuntu 9.04, of which
I have the beta, which should not be much different.
Downloaded KMNX18122 to /home/ubuntu, added msvcp71.dll
and msvcr71.dll from the Internet to the K-Meleon
root folder and installed wine 1.0.1-0ubuntu6 with
Synaptic from the Ubuntu repository.
Renamed profile.ini to profile.ini2, and started.
No problems here.
I could only imagine a corrupted download of
KMNX18122 .
Or are you behind a proxy server that would not let
you pass ? Then you would possibly have to edit
the manual proxy settings in Preferences/Proxy .
It is also strange that it does not work in Vista.
If only the Internet would be blocked, it would
simply not go to the website, but not crash.
So I think it might be a corrupted download.

You can try to upper versions, I use wine 1.1.25, and except sometimes some crashes, it works correctly and fast (faster than Firefox for Linux)

I use 1.53 standard version.

Probably been asked before but Will there ever be a linux version that doesn't use wine? Never had a reason to know until now because I use linux most of the time now.

I have tried a new install of KM-NX-18122 in Vista,
and have encountered the same problem.
This seems to be present since I installed the
Vista Service Pack.
It seems that the file compreg.dat cannot be created
correctly now in Vista.
I have uploaded a compreg.dat and an xpti.dat that
can be put into the folder components to solve the
problem in Vista.
Go to
http://one.xthost.info/eichhein
to download compreg.dat and xpti.dat .
Copy and paste the two files into the folder
components and delete a possibly existing profile in the
K-Meleon root folder before starting the browser.
I hope that this will work in Vista now.

Hum, I'm not sure that can be the solution.

The content of compreg.dat and xpi.dat is dependant of the content of the folder components, so if an extension is installed , and use an xpt or dll file in components, it won't work correctly.

This NX version does not support extensions,
NX = NoXul available. I hope that it will work.
There is no problem here for me with wine and
Linux, and it works ok in XP, only Vista seems not
to be able to create a correct compreg.dat anymore.

I downloaded the new compreg & xpti files and it works with both Vista & wine.


TIP: Wine actually allows you to run programs directly from you Windows partition (i.e. without having to install the program on your Linux partition).

It is very useful, for example, to have all your bookmarks in the same place or emails. I run both Thunderbird & K-meleon like this.

Yes this is a feature which can be used, but there is a little problem for me.

The registry must be uopdate to allow to open files with windows programs.

I have made an extension which allows to open files with linux programs, and it's not compatible with an use under Windows. So, I have installed K-Meleon under Linux and I use specific version with each OS.

I used portable versions for each of KM and Thunderbird. All I had to do is create a shortcut in Linux. I like portable versions because I can easily backup emails and KM settings, bookmarks, etc. by copying the entire program folders to a disk or flash memory.
