new version : K-Meleon-NX-1816

I have uploaded to Rapidshare a new updated no-Xul version :
K-Meleon-NX-1816 .
This is a simplified version of K-Meleon 1.x ,
usable in Linux together with wine , or also in Windows,
updated to Mozilla 1.8.1.6 using Gecko/20070802,
from Seamonkey 1.1.4.
Look and feel are similar to the earlier 0.9 versions.
The NX No-chrome concept is used here. Thanks to Hao Jiang and Dorian.
The browser is very fast, because Xul is not used.
Note : Flashblock, Aggreg8 and other extensions are not included in this
no-chrome version. No autocomplete as it causes problems in Linux.
Ad-blocking by userContent.css and hostperm.1 .
Many useful search engines have been added.
The profiles folder will be created inside the K-Meleon main folder.
If, when in Linux, you want this folder inside the wine configuration directory
because of property rights problems, rename the file profile.ini
inside the K-Meleon main folder to for example profile.ini-renamed
before the first start.
Note :
This version works only if you have the files mfc71.dll,msvcp71.dll
and msvcr71.dll in your system or in your K-Meleon folder.
If you need them, look for them in the internet .
If necessary in Linux, copy the files manually to the K-Meleon main folder.
A javascript button has been included. After changing permissions
for javascript, reload the page.
History must be deleted manually.

There is a mfc71.dll Version 7.10.3077.0 in the AVG v7 Prog Dir. Is it safe to copy and use this?

The other 2 mentioned are already in K-Meleon and also Acronis True Image 10, msvcr71.dll also bobs up in SuperAntispyWare, BartPE, Threatfire, Sun Java and Windows system32. They do get around, don't they?

You will see immediately, if the browser works with the chosen
dll versions, or not. Of course, they should come from
a site or program, that you trust. I cannot tell you, if
you can rely on these sources.

Well folks, I have MFC71.DLL file version 7.10.6041.0 from the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 Service Pack 1 MS07-012 (KB927696) security update and Kmeleon seems to work okay with it. Let me know if you need the newer mfc71.dll file that fixes the security flaws mentioned in MS security bulletin MS07-012.

As I found out using Linux with wine, the file mfc71.dll
seems to be necessary only, if you want to use the kplugin
favorites.dll, in order to use Favorites, in addition to bookmarks.
If you are satisfied with (Netscape) bookmarks only,
you will have to add only msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll,
to the main K-Meleon folder (where K-Meleon.exe is), in case
that they are not already present in your Windows system
in windows/system32.

I keep getting a crash at startup with this version, it says that the crash has occured with gklayout.dll. After the crash K-Meleon closes down, and then crashes again on restart.

Any ideas? WindowsXP FYI.

This should normally not happen.
I can only imagine a false interaction with
another profile that you had from another version
in the C://Documents.... folder, where the usual
location for K-Meleon profiles is.
Did you rename profile.ini ? This would use a formerly
existing profile.
The original profile.ini would create an own, separate
profile inside the browser main directory.
Other instances of a K-Meleon version should be
closed before starting this version, because only
one K-Meleon can run ar rge same time.
After having a crash, you should check if the crashed browser
is really closed, using the task manager, which you can
start pressing Ctrl Alt and Delete at the same time.
There should be no open K-Meleon in the Applications window.
Otherwise it has to be terminated manually before a new
browser start.
I hope that you succeed finding the error.

No there\'s no other profiles in there, in fact I removed the previous version I had of K-Meleon anyhow. There is a \"profiles\" folder made in the K-MeleonNX folder, but looking in it I cannot see where the problem may lay. Doesn\'t appear to be a cache folder made either.

The browser basically crashes and shuts down after starting, before the crash happens the main window shows, but no page is displayed. Deleting the profiles folder and restarting doesn\'t fix anything.

Tried looking in Task Manager, this is a clean crash of K-meleon, no bogey instances are left running.

You could try the older version K-Meleon-NX-1814 :

http://rapidshare.com/files/35526466/K-Meleon-NX-1814.zip.html

It has an older Gecko engine, but still safe in K-Meleon,
as long as you keep "mailto:" connected to an alert popup,
which is the default, and do not use Quicktime (possible
vulnerability in Firefox, but may be not in K-Meleon).

If this fails too, I am sorry not having a better solution.

I had the same problem as Arial with NX 1816 on 3 different computers--all running XP SP2. 1.1.2 runs fine and so does NX 1814.

"I keep getting a crash at startup with this version, it says that the crash has occured with gklayout.dll. After the crash K-Meleon closes down, and then crashes again on restart.

"The browser basically crashes and shuts down after starting, before the crash happens the main window shows, but no page is displayed. Deleting the profiles folder and restarting doesn\'t fix anything.

"Tried looking in Task Manager, this is a clean crash of K-meleon, no bogey instances are left running."

I sent the crash reports. I would like to see it run of course, but I can wait for the next version. I would like to say thanks to K-Meleon developers.

Would it be possible to use a service such as http://esnips.com so the links won't go dead after a while?

If you mean collective bookmarking like for del.icio.us,
you can probably still use macros, adapted for your preferred site,
like the ones in the following forum threads :

for Furl (furl.net)

http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?2,47858,47858#msg-47858

for Spurl (spurl.net) see the post by lumo

http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?1,42084,69996#msg-69996

If you cannot adapt them, use them as they are for Furl or Spurl,
adding them in your Profiles folder in macros.cfg and menus.cfg as
described there.

Before working on these files, save a copy of the originals.
