Alain,

Further to your good work, would it be okay if I added a link to your jujuLand downloads for Pocket K-M 1.1 from my webpage at http://kmeleon.uk.to?

Of course, I wouldn't want to cause you any bandwidth problems!

Alain,

Unfortunately, I'm getting an Application Error when I try and run your Pocket K-M 1.1 from a USB flash drive under Windows XP:
"The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application."
I copied across msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll to the K-M folder but still no luck.
Am I missing something obvious?!

Curious, I have some testers who haven't any problem.
MS dll are already included in the package.

I'll make a try.

Alain,

This is very strange! I have just tried Pocket K-M 1.1 under Win 2000 + SP4, both natively and in a VMware Server virtual machine running under Mepis 6.5 Linux. It works fine in both environments.

So, I am baffled as to why it didn't work under Win XP at work today.
I will try it on another couple of Win XP machines tomorrow and report back if I have further problems.

I have tried under XP PRO SP2, and I have had a little problem, which I don't understand the reason.

I have tried on the USB Stick, and it seems not to launch K-Meleon. I see, I've forrgotten to put ms dll. Even when adding it, it doesn't work.

I then copy the cxomplete Pocket folder on the desktop: it works
I try again since USK stick, it works.

It's a little like if windows needs to register something. I haven't found something in the registry. It's perhaps due to ms dll?

Try the trick I use to see if it works now. I never had errors, just K-Meleon not launching.

Alain,

Another one up, another one down!

Failed on one Win XP+SP2 machine (which already had the MS DLLs) just as before. Then worked on another Win XP+SP2 machine which didn't have the MS DLLs - I copied them to the K-M folder on the USB flash drive.

Very odd indeed, and you might well be right about the MS DLLs putting something in the registry.

All dll are and must be registered when they are in the Windows central dll repository.

p. s. K-Meleon (and other apps) have a search path where they expect certain type dll. So K-Meleon can find MS C+ libaries such as msvcp71.dll inside his root folder
- any dll there does not need the be registered by system.

BTW. MS dll are problematic because they often have several versions and some apps need a specific version, while other installed apps do not work with it. Solution place the specific dll in app folder (search path) to find smiling smiley

Yes guenter,

Different versions of MS DLLs can cause horrible problems, and I think your advice is good. I have wasted much time in the past with certain Windows programs which demanded a particular DLL version.

Oh well, time to leave DLL hell for a while and return to Linux and its own package dependency issues ... winking smiley

Douglas,

The best for you is that you can use it with VmWare under Linux.

For other users under XP, they might have no errors, for the others they will have to search themselves for the dll problems.

:-)

Alain,

I have used your K-Meleon 1.1 portable version now for nearly 2-weeks on a couple different MSWinXP machines and have found no problems.

I've used the program on a 80G USB drive and also on a 2G USB stick with a couple different "launchers" without difficulty.

Cheers on a fine program!

Although I'm not directly supporting Pocket K-Meleon 1.1, a few more folk have reported problems running the executable, usually producing an error message like:
"The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application."
This was the problem I had on a few Win XP machines. Copying over the MS DLLs to the K-M folder did help on some, but didn't solve the problem 100%.
Alas, I'm afraid this is going to give Pocket K-Meleon a bad name on sites like http://www.portablefreeware.com/ unless the problem is properly fixed.

Hi Douglas,

I'm finishing 1.1.2, except I'm waiting for a kprofile.dll update from Dorian (he's probably on holidays), and I'll integrate MS dll in root folder, to limit this problem (I personnaly haven't had exactly this problem)

If this is due to a ms dll registration, it will be difficult, and not wished to register on a computer which perhaps is not our own, and on which we perhaps haven't the permissions.

Thanks for the update Alain. Hope that Dorian can help with kprofile.dll.
What is odd is that I never encountered this DLL registration problem with K-M 1.0 running on any Windows XP machines. Something has changed somewhere ...

Dorian helps me, just by telling me that the name used is just the fact of profile.dll.

I'd forgotten to delete it, just adding kprofile, which was a mistake.

Quickly, before the end of the week, I think having put the new version online.

It seems that it's caused by compression of K-Meleon.exe and some components dll.

I haven't had time to test completely why it crashes, but I'm about (no date now, because I'm too busy) to make an uncompressed USB version, if the size is not prohibiting, but I don't think it will be too big.

You can easily try it from the Pocket version I've already made:

Keep a copy of profile.dll (of pocket version), and replace all the others dll and xpt files of components folder with the 1.1.2 official version. Delete dat files in components folder.

replace K-Meleon.exe by 1.1.2 official version.

It ought to work, and really faster than compressed version, but the same way as Pocket (no history, ...)
