Hi,

I have a web page with a link to a pdf file and when I click on it kmeleon keeps trying to save the file instead of just opening the pdf with adobe reader. I have gone to other web sites with .pdf files and they seem to open .pdf files in the kmeleon browser fine.

If I use IE to open my site's pdf links they open in the browser without a problem. This is on a w98 pc using Adobe reader 6.0.4. The about:plugins does show the Adobe Acrobat plugin.

your site doesn't exist, and we can't see what is the origin of the problem.

Second:
does the problem occurs on this site only, or on all the sites ?

Third:
Which version of K-Meleon ?
Does it has mimetypes jar included ?

1) The site is password protected and I removed the actual domain name to avoid any one from trying to access. Sorry.

2) I think its only a problem on my site. I've gone to a couple other sites and they seem to be ok, pdf's open within the browser on those sites. I'm just not sure what I'm doing wrong on my site that k-meleon doesn't like or want to open the pdf. FYI, xls and .doc type files open ok.

3) K-meleon v 0.9
I'm not sure how or what to check with the 'mimetypes jar included' question. What is this refering to , how to I check this?

Is-it the standard 0.9 version or one improved 0.9 version that you can take on Unofficial K-Meleon build page ?

Try one of these:

09 En4 or Fred' 8+ have this improvement.

It's perhaps due to the page itself, and not to K-Meleon.

Can you give a piece of source of the page where you have this link ?

I'm using the Std 0.9 version.

I can try a improved one if you think it will help.

It might be my page. But I don't have any problem with these pages loading the pdf's from IE or firefox.

Here's part of the table that contains the html with the link to the pdf I'm trying to open:

It won't let me put any of the html code in the post... Keeps giving me a 'sorry' message.

How else can I put a snippet of the html in the post?

Yes, I forget to say that you must replace < and > character's by others { and } for example. It occurs since anytime, I suppose we are now not allowed to put html in post.

If on other sites, pdf files open right, I don't think it's necessary to update the version.

But, I think the last are better, because more secure (gecko updated, noscript implemented, ...)

Thanks... I'll update my version regardless.

I asked my web server people about this and I think I may have been missing some mimetypes in the setup on the server. I guess there are some defaults predefined , but maybe the one k-meleon is using for the pdf isn't??

I'll try setting up the mimetype and see if that works. I'll let you know.

Mimetypes are defined in the browser, not the server.

In the new versions:

Fred Plus8 : Menu Edit >> just over Preferences
En4 : Menu Tools >> Advanced >> Just over Javascript Console

It opens a new window or layer

Choose application/pdf
Choose 'Open with default application' instead of 'Save to disk'

Don't check 'Ask each time ...', it seems not to work (with 'Open with')

The problem is almost certainly with your server's settings. It is most likely telling the browser that the PDF is some MIME type other than a PDF. Misconfigured servers are a common cause of problems like these. (The reason it can still work in IE is because IE doesn't follow standards, and ignores MIME type declarations, judging files purely on their extensions.)

Yes, I think you are right. I received a email from my server support people and they gave me a additional list of mime types to add to my servers setting. I haven't been able to make the change yet, but I believe it sounds like it should fix the problem.

Thanks for all your help. I setup the mimetypes that my web server passes and that solved the problem. Now when I try to open the link which points to a pdf on my web server it properly opens adobe reader within the browser.
