Nice K-Meleon reviews:O

I start collecting good reviews of new KM from the Web.

1. K-Meleon 75 Beta 1 on Neowin

Quote

New features are added if they improve the performance and usefulness of the browser; not simply because they are "cool" to have. Whenever possible the extra funcitonality is added through plugins, which means that it will not be a burden for those who rather stay without. The modular design of K-Meleon is one of its strengths.

Quote

It is flattering when people compare K-Meleon with those applications, but it is not needed. K-Meleon is not at war. The K-Meleon developers do not aim for world domination.

2. K-Meleon: A Lightweight, Low-RAM Browser For Old PCs 2014 - 2015 on Planet botch

Quote

Using any current browser on a very old PC is going to be a slow experience, but K-Meleon makes it sensibly bearable, and it’s not constantly dipping into virtual memory in desperation. It’s nice to see some programmers acknowledging that not all PCs are brand new, and releasing a product that doesn’t render a 256-512MB machine useless. I use several low RAM machines – not all typically for the Web, but it’s nice to be able to get them online and use sites when necessary. It should be recognised that K-Meleon may not be the best performer on a fast PC, but where RAM is critical, for me it comes into its own.

K-Meleon 74 was included in last DVD of Computer Bild russian edition and featured on the centre spread of the magazine!

No screenshot for now, sorry - it's the fresh issue.

Cool! I'm thinking more and more that latest KM75 dev versions should be added on the homepage, which still says "Latest Development Release: Currently none!" since KM74 came out! If people believe that, they aren't going to look further for newer versions...

Fully agreed!

Most of us, technical minded persons, underestimate meaning of that newsbreaks and information per se.

But 90% of Google Chrome success is the information war.

LOL!! Very curious indeed grinning smiley But somehow I don't quite trust this to be real...
Also curious, it started all of a sudden in march 2018.
Could it be due to KM-Goanna, just because it's more widely known since roytam posted his weeklies continuously on MSFN too?
But can't quite be, because: why only in THIS country??

StatCounter for Armenia

The fact that it started in March 2018 has a simple explanation.
As far as I can recall it was around the time when FirefoxESR dropped support for WinXP and legacy extensions.
By ending support for legacy extensions and moving to web extensions, Firefox has lost many users worldwide!
Also keep in mind that WinXP probably still has a strong share in Armenia.
As for why K-Meleon, it is probably a regional thing and has less to do with the MSFN forums where one can find other forks supporting WinXP and even legacy extensions.

A new and very detailed review and presentation of K-Meleon76, in russian
Lots of screenshots and detailed explanations for users:

http://lumpics.ru/k-meleon/

The title is K-Meleon 76-Goanna
But the review is about KM76-Pro, and
"Download the latest version of the program from the official site"
links to http://kmeleon.geckoworld.ru/distrib/

Oh well, no one without previous experience will get the idea that a program with a certain version number is something completely different from the same program with the same version number :-/

And I keep wishing rodocop or someone else would make a new update package again, to fix all the features which basically work but no one knows because there's no GUI for them since years. Preferably not as standalone build like Pro, but as a zipped package with only the additional stuff...

Or as workaround for the time being, perhaps rodocop can do just a quick PRO update by overwriting the PRO-folder with the latest Goanna build, and uploading for others? Some users have mentioned that works.

Have now read the whole page
(see above, http://lumpics.ru/k-meleon/ )

Major pity - they are only showing the obvious main menus, but didn't mention or discover any of the hidden tricks or gems sad smiley Of course, no wonder, how could they? It's all hidden...

Now I dimly remember... KM-Pro comes with tons of pre-installed skins, but if I recall correctly only 1 of them had the Privacy Toolbar switched on? Every new user seems to overlook this absolutely special feature, as in official builds too sad smiley
Correction: not all official builds have the PrivBar OFF by default, in some it's already ON smiling smiley

And right-clicks on buttons!! Another specialty, most buttons have a handy options menu on right-click, and they can be freely chosen by users too (in toolbars.cfg again). But no KM-beginner ever realizes this, just because KM-buttons with menus have no arrow at the side, to save space....

And the "search like Opera" method in the urlbar, which many users seem to like, but no one discovers it's possible in KM too, and how (searching with keywords, e.g. "g" for google)...

And shared IE-Favorites (no import, just shared simultaneously)...

And the existence of macros and KM-extensions, plenty in the forum and on kmext.sf.net, which users can install. And partly customize themselves if they really want - but no one is aware of it. New users and reviewers all seem convinced browsers can only be extended with complex xpi-addons, but with this type KM still has difficulties.

And the background for toolbars can very easily be customized with own images or grapics or just a nicer color, but in official builds that's disabled by default. And none of the default skins contains any remotely nice pic anyway....
(Note: for quick testing have attached a little beige-golden background and a few other examples to this post, just place one as 'back.bmp' in your current skin folder. Hit F2>GUI (on top) and check "Display toolbar background", then restart)

Not a really hidden function, just off by default now and hard to find:
K-Meleon also has a main Menu line on top available. It's a toolbar like all others, and can be toggled on/off by right-clicking in a free toolbar space, or in View>Toolbars. In Firefox that menuline is off by default too, but there the menu shows up when holding the ALT-key. The prob: in KM that key alone does nothing. Therefore some people at first glance assume this top menu wouldn't exist at all.
Here's a little alternative trick: you can keep the Menu bar permanently visible, but with a width of only a few millimeters! How: just pull another toolbar over it from the right side, so that this toolbar covers most of the menu bar. Except a little bit of its beginning.
Another prob if menu bar is disabled: some functions are only accessible in the "File" menu, which exists only in that top menu. People can't find those functions while that toolbar is off. In the past that included the offline-toggle, in newer builds only the Open-local-file function (alternative: keyboard shortcut CTRL+O). And a bunch of macros insert their functions only in the "File" menu too (you can change almost all menu positions yourself, but only by editing files, not by drag-drop)

Or some tips from here:
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/wiki/faq#Misc
etc. ....

K-Meleon is just a browser that definitely needs a little beginner guide
Just where, and how...? Don't know either sad smiley
It's really no wonder reviewers never discover such stuff either. But longer reviews such as this one again (lumpics) would be a great place to give people hints about important KM basics.

(_HowTo_ a few beginner tips)

Another nice one, a long comparison of the main browsers and a few alternatives
From 2017, updated 2018, but obviously not aware of KM-Goanna or NewMoon yet:

The most lightweight browser. Which browser is better for weak computers?

K-Meleon. Oddly enough, this little-known browser is at the top of the list precisely because of its speed. The program is very easy, takes a minimum of resources.

Another friendly little russian review:
https://public-pc.com/kak-skachat-k-meleon-brauzer/

2019-06-19
It's about -of course- the 'stable' K-Meleon 75.1 from 2015 again, as all of that general quickreview kind.
And, of course, extremely superficial too, since all non-KM-experts are just trying out what is visible.

What made me first think this must be quite old, before checking the date on top again:
If a video doesn't play in KM, the user just needs to update the flash plugin?? Hm.....

A little report of someone who tested a couple browsers for his old XP machines.
What's strange is the KM-version 74 in a new post, but perhaps it's only a copy of an old post from anywhere else, no idea. At any rate, at some point, this was a valid post.
Also no idea about the language, it's not russian although cyrillic, but works automatically:
