K-Meleon Not Working With Talk Talk UK Webmail

Just downloaded the latest vn of K-Meleon (that will work on Win 98 ) in the
hope that this issue is resolved - but no.

Logging into Talk Talk UK to use their webmail. Every other browser I have used
(IE, Chrome, Safari on other than Win 98) displays the number of new unread
emails as the first page. Can then click on 'inbox' to read them.

In K-Meleon first page is never displayed. You just get the loging in 'rotating
circle' constantly. The first page with your number of unread emails is never
displayed.

Had hoped this problem might have been sorted by now. sad smiley

K-Meleon 1.54
Win 98se

Have you tried changing the user agent to Firefox? Some websites do not correctly check for the browser being used. They look for the name of the browser instead of its engine name. User agent is located under the tools menu.

I hope that posing as Firefox 2 will help You for now & the next time.

If not?

IE 6 SP1 is AFAIK the last version of IE that supports Win98.
Not all web mail pages support it anymore.
But have You tried with that version?

If it does not work either?

What You can do in this case is install kernelx. That lets You use K-Meleon 1.6beta2 and some Firefox versions that can still ccess most webmail pages.

To the point. On other than Win 98 means that Chrome, Safari do not support Win 98.

I do not know whether Your ISP provider Talk Talk UK's Webmail will ever support Win 98 compatible browsers again. I doubt it.

In any case it is not a próblem K-Meleom.org has caused and was morally obliged to sort out ny now. sad smiley

There will be lots more hits if spelling it "KernelEx", it has 2 "e" ;-)
I'm happily running KM1.6beta on win98se (german version), thanks to KernelEx smiling smiley

Thanks for you reply.

Yes I did try changing the user agent (had done that in the past with a diff
browser against the Talk Talk site and it worked then. This used a user agent
of "Firefox/3.5")

Regarding K-Meleon, first I used the inbuilt ones - Firefox 2.0 then SeaMonkey 1.1
- but neither worked

I then tried Custom and specified

"Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98)"

which is what IE 6 appears to use - but no luck. (Note: IE 6 works ok with TT)

In case I had my syntax wrong I reselected the inbuilt Firefox 2.0 then changed to
Custom and changed the Firefox/2.0.0.20 to Firefox/3.5 - but that didn't work
either.

If my syntax is wrong or you can suggest another user agent string that might
work I would be grateful.

Hmm, that doesnt look good.
Perhaps that one..?
Opera/9.23 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en)

It's possible that the site uses a 'modern' script that requires KM1.6
Or perhaps it can be worked around in KM1.5x with some user css, but have no idea.

That sort of 'old-engine-bugs' happen more and more often and are what make me prefer KM1.6beta nowadays, although that has a few minor 'GUI bugs'. It's the lesser evil, at least for me currently.

@ Anubisss spoofing IE is no good since IE uses another JavaScript dialect that is not understood by K-Meleon.

Using siria's Opera string has more prospect. Provided that Talk Talk tries to support old JavAScript implementations. If that fails You'd probably have to use IE or install KernelEX. Which gives You back some choices with alternative browsers.

Maybe You should have rather lost a few words about KernelEx using K-Meleon1.6. tongue sticking out smiley

BTW. I found something new about skin and alpha support on some Windows versions.

K-Meleon's new alpha transparent skins have this bad look in Windows 98/ME/2000 because the transparency relies on Windows Common Control version 6.

K-Meleon's internal manifest tell Windows XP and newer to use that version of common control for transparency support and not another version that is in dystem32. Older system do not seem to know this.

So it is not the skin bmp that has a fault. Maybe You can use this knowledge on Win98? I wonder whether it can use Common Controls versions 6.
