1.5.4 on Win XP(old I know).
The answer to Your original post is:
Because web pages do not support the 1.5.4 K-Meleon browsers GRE anymore.
GRE = Gecko Rendering Engine that is developed by Mozilla.org.
Please use the stable development versions 1.6.betaN, 1.7 alphaN or 1.8/74betaN
that have GREs that are still supported by most pages or are current.
1.6 beta is offered on the download page.

and here together with 1.7:

74b3 is here:

1.8b11 is here:

1.6 and 1.7 have inofficial updates. They can still be used on OSes not suported by MS anymore such as Win98 and Win2000.
WinXP is not old or obsolete but it is not supported by its vendor anymore. And the vendor has already started to issue develpment software such as Visual C++ versions and SDKs that create Software that is not compatible with XP anymore.
That is the time honored way MS also forced previous OSes out of use.
