Document contains no data ??
Posted by: Fast Sjonny

I don't know why but sometimes I get the errormessage ' document contains no data ' after going to a new url. This can be a new website but also a new link on a website (what is an Url ofcourse). It seems like a time-out but I have no idea which setting can prevent me from getting this message and what I don't understand is why I am getting this message with the 0.8.2 version and not with the previous 0.8 and 0.8.1.

To have an idea these are my ' speed-up' settings in prefs.js:

Good question.
I think because I am using the Firebirdlike toolbar-extension ??
I started with a clean prefs.js and after a few days this is the result.
Don't know what it is doing, can you explain?

You are right, I was forgotten that. I am using the single-window mode.

But, still the question why I am getting this 'document contains no data'' error..

'Document contains no data' is a webserver error, not on the browser side. It usually happens after a GET / POST CGI submission (in my experience anyway). I can reproduce the error (in any browser) with a Perl script that doesn't return any information (or doesn't return it quickly enough) after a submission. I've done it by mistake a few times with scripts that take a long time to return. Push refresh a few times and it will probably work.

I was going to post the a similar problem with my getting the "This Document Contains No Data" and also "Null Cannot Be Found. Please Check The Name and Try Again." It happens all the time on a stock chart site that I frequent. Go to this site http://finance.lycos.com/qc/livecharts/default.aspx?symbols= and put in a stock symbol like IBM > Submit > Chart styles % tools > ExportChart > Printable Chart. A new page should load a printable chart, but it doesn`t with K-Meleon. I have considered giving up on K-Meleon because of this problem. Can anyone help?

Realgeorge,

WFM on K-Meleon 0.8.2 on Windows 2000 with Java 1.4.1_06 for Netscape Navigator. Did you change any of your cache settings??

I am using K-Meleon 0.8.2 on Windows 98 with Java 1.4.1_06 on a 56k dialup. efosbi, I don`t know what a "maxed connection" means. My K-Meleon and Java were freshly re-installed today and I still have the problem, but only with K-Meleon. WFM means Works For Me.

realgeorge, when i say "my connection is maxed" i mean that all my available bandwidth is being used. like if im listening to a 24k or 32k internet radio station (streaming music) then usually my connection is maxed. if i browse the net while im listening to streaming music, then my connection will be completely maxed meaning no more bandwidth left, lol. btw, b4 i found KM i was using IE and i wasnt able to surf the net at all when listening to streaming music, but when i found KM i found that i can still manage to load most webpages while listening to streaming music on dialup. KM rules! lol

Do not only search this Phorum. grinning smiley

Search the bug by DuckDuckGo or Google also. smiling smiley

The fault is not K-Meleon specific and may not be browser related at all. The causes range from broken php scripts, via censorship to the PC's own security software.

So I doubt that Dorian can fix it once and for all. smiling smiley

p.s. K-Meleon is a project that uses native widgets, MFC code to integrate Mozilla's Gecko Rendering Engine into Windows.

It does not fix Gecko bugs, web sites, Your PC's security software and settings nor does it prevent censorship.

I think it might be an issue with the way K-Meleon handles its disk cache.

I also use CoolNova and both browsers do it sometimes. Only that the Chrome engine based browser has another error message than the Mozilla based browser.

So it is my PC or the pages.

You are trying to hunt shadows, ghosts.

There isn't any issue in K-meleon as it is how web works and the way the browsers gives information to the user about an error.

A common scenario when this happens is when you try to connect to a page, the server replies, as it has the port open, but actually, is not sending any data back.

Why does this happen? Or a misconfiguration in ports on the server side or the application listening in that port on the server is not receiving the expected request.

For example, let's say I have set SSL port open (443), and I have a SSL capable application listening to that port, but, what it actually does is redirect to another server where it really resides the web server because it is only working as a proxy but that second server can't reply for some reason, so, it can't give data back. When this connection times out in any browser, and for time out it means no "HTTP/1.1 200 OK" message, it displays "The document contains no data".

It is as simple and complicated as that.

If you really think that this is not happening in your sceneario, tell us, if doesn't invade your privacy, and we will test it.

IMHO yes John. As I said. It can be anything I mentioned above.

The Chrome browser (CoolNovo) version of this error has this English wording.

"No data received
Unable to load the webpage because the server sent no data.
Here are some suggestions:
Reload this web page later.
Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data."

When this thread was started there was AFAIRemember an issue with the Gecko engine.

But that is history now.

I know You'd replied to Zero3K. Yes about in 0.8 times when Fast Sjonny started this thread. I googled for posts about the problem at Mozilla.zine.

But as they (that were senior K-Meleon users and devs then in late 2003) posted - it was more likely false alarm. At least K-Meleon did not have many such problems.

Fast Sjonny experimented with settings then. He always did if I remember rightly. grinning smiley

p.s. I personally think I have more Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE) nowadays.

I wait endless till some ad.servers complete their task or send empty response. sad smiley

I think I managed to fix the issue by changing the maximum Disk Cache size to 50 MB. It was occurring when I had it set to 999 MB. I am going to try setting it to 250 MB to see if the issue occurs or not.

IMHO. Most "document contains not data comes" from php pages, PC network and security settings.

Cache settings should not do harm.

Bigger cache value speeds up browsing. Maybe use Fast Sjonny's old values or more.
He knew all about speeding up a Mozilla browser that was to know during
that time.

You could change: browser.cache.disk.smart_size.enabled to false.

And use a value of 300 or more MB.

But I think smart cache would also set it that high.

There is a limit to the number of entries.

You are right. Its an issue with the server hosting the page, not an issue with K-Meleon's cache function.
