I'm curious, what do you mean by True Color icon?

I mean, from my point of view, you could be mixing the idea of True Color icon with True Color+Alpha (alpha as the transparent background).

K-meleon already display icons in True Color, but not True Color+Alpha (black background instead transparent background).

For example, from the red lines to the left, the original icon of this site; to the right, how is the favicon displayed at 16x16 in the urlbar and tabs. The background isn't shown transparent.

postimage

If it is this what you are meaning, maybe you could request it in K-meleon 74 Release Candidate installer thread.

You can use this image as an example for Dorian.

EDIT: could be that there isn't a library for icons, because the bmp default icon for bookmarks/urls is displayed with the background transparent.

Windows 2000 --> IE 6 (quite buggy favicon support)

But what I could see, is the same, except background.

Any other one to test it?

Oh, ok, with 32 bit depth in XP the background is transparent winking smiley

On 2000 no. Who cares xD

And I guess the True Color works too at 32 bit depth.

Definitely I'm not having that issue, nor virtual or physical XP.

Yours is as if the icon were a bad optimized 256 colors icon or less, or a bad gif :-S

You were in 7 right?

I have no clue what could be happening to you :-?

The image is read using gecko code. Maybe it's a problem with hardware acceleration.

The only problem from kmeleon could be the resizing, but there is no resizing here since the icon is already in the correct size.

I have hardware accleration disabled via its about:config.

So, is there really no way to fix it?

EDIT: Going directly to the favicon.ico that NeoGAF uses makes the icon in the tab of the icon's url look more like how it should compared to the same icon shown when a tab has loaded a page on that site.

EDIT2: I wrote a forum post about the issue on its site. Hopefully its fixable on their end.

EDIT3: Here's a screenshot of the issue:

But it's not their fault.

Look, this is the icon in a filmstrip format extracted with GifMovieGear (icon creator and animator program that I use "a little"):

And I won't make more detail about it, but each icon in the ICL (icon library) is in 24 bit format (even using less than 256 color each) plus alpha.

If us (we, only Dorian and me had replied) haven't problems after several tests, I think could be a problem in your system. Not even in K-meleon.

Beyond the Dorian question, I'll ask, do you have an integrated graphic card, or embedded graphics chip?, do you have the latest drivers? I know, by my own experience, that Windows 7, at least a couple of years back, couldn't deal correctly with these kind of graphics adapters and drivers. In particular with Nvidia embedded graphics and CPU+GPU embedded ones as AMD does a lot.

Note: all edits to this post were words corrections confused smiley

I use a NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT as my graphics card with the latest drivers installed.

Deleting the IconCache.dat in my profile's directory fixed this issue.

EDIT: There is one more issue involving a favicon of another site. The issue is that the favicon on http://yugioh.wikia.com/ isn't being shown correctly in K-Meleon.

This time is a resizing issue and i'll fix this (probably not on w2k though).
But looking at the image I get from gecko, it also looks darker than what it should be.

Even at versions as old as 1.x there were, not only corruptions but crashes, so is luck if only gets corrupted. Just disable favicons (edit: favicon caching, I mean).

Only if you are used to browse bookmarks by icon should be a problem winking smiley

Since MFC/Visual Studio is writing the cache, even if I could reproduce the bug it would be hard to find the cause. In the case I see this myself, i'll try to look at it.

Got the bug, for the same icon. I saw it because it was displayed for another website. So I got both bug at the same time. I've found reference of a similar bug in microsoft forums (color degrading after multiple save/load), but it looks like it was never fixed.

Can You use the Firefox technology together with the K-Meleon Mozilla bookmarks plugin?

Mozilla devs must have fixed the problem for their apps' favicons?

Maybe store the icons in a cache or a sqlite data base and reference them?

That should avoid the multiple save/load operations which degrade the colors.
