Something became corrupted and I performed a backup reinstall and it is back to normal.

Nothing corrupted, you just have blocked javascript
Flashblock requires javascript to work, it's mentioned in the preferences sheet F2 > content filters

Strange though, even as I had accidentally hit F7, I enabled Javascript again, closed the program, but I was never again able to get FlashBlock to work.

No problem though, the Profile Restore fixed it just fine (and a great option that is, too).
