K-Meleon is fast

Yes, it's overweight. I just checked the directory size of Opera 10, FireFox 1.5, IE 6 and K-M 1.5 and K-M was the fattest! All 4 have their caches cleared BTW. Opera I did delete the lexicon and indexer which will be recreated so I expect it will normally the biggest. But K-M is fatter than FF 1.5.

It is good that K-Meleon 1.5.4 is fatter than Firefox 1.5. tongue sticking out smiley

Opera is AFAIK packed with an Exe packer. You could do the same for Firefox...
IE 6 has installed many outer components in other directories.
Get its installer and look at its size.

Firefox/Mozilla/K-Meleon GREs have grown over the versions.
Easy to see if You get e.g. the Firefox Nostalgia Pack & compare the installers.

Firefox joins the individual dll of ./components into the exe (till version2 / they call it static) or link them into the Xul.dll (3-4+). Up, it saves a few kb overhead for each dll. Down, You always load the whole lot. That even loads the componrnts used by the mail (thunderbird) only. The later has AFAIK the same GRE as Firefox.

All recent official K-Meleon discard about 1.3 MB ./components files but keep the dll & xpt shared/separate.

Well, that means all K-Meleons except this private version done by Dorian, TechJunk & others. It is done static like a Firefox and uses packing like Opera. Maybe download it and compare the size with an early Firefox 1.5.surprised smiley

How many extensions do You have install into Firefox 1.5 or 2 to get the same functionality as K-Meleons 1.0-1.5.4 ship out of the box? What is the size of these extensions when installed?

K-Meleon ships e.g. 3 skins not one like Firefox 2 which has about the same size when installed... What is the size of an installed additional Firefox Skin?
Only the used K-Meleon skin is loaded.

Did You check with a reliable tool what sizes the browsers have in RAM when they load pages?

Don't forget that K-Meleon 1.5 is a much newer browser
than Firefox 1.5 or Internet Explorer 6, and it has
much fewer safety problems.
Firefox 1.5 is from 2005, and it can be compared to
the mentioned K-Meleon-0.8.2+-Wechselbalg, which
is dating from 2004. This version was, compared to FF 1.5,
about 30% smaller.
You could also consider my chromeless variation
K-Meleon-NX18124, which was updated until 2010, and
which has about the size of the old FF 1.5 .
As it has no Xul-chrome, there aren't any extensions usable.
Download still available here:

http://ge.tt/6RMl5j

If you do not have the 71 runtimes already in your system,
you can install them, using the KM082-DLL-install.exe
from Techjunks site, here :

http://techjunk.nl/data/kmeleon/KM082-DLL-Install.exe

This is also needed, if you would choose to use
K-Meleon-0.8.2+-Wechselbalg from Techjunks site, here:

http://techjunk.nl/data/kmeleon/K-Meleon_0.8.2+_EN_setup.exe

If using old browser versions, be careful to
turn off javascript as often as possible, and
to use it only if this is absolutely necessary.
For very old browsers, it is IMHO also not advisable
to use the flash plugin.

Actually speaking of the 71 dll's I checked and it turns out my system has several of them installed already. I think with Network 1.1. I suppose I could save a few K disk space if I erase the one in the K-M dir. Of course not all of them appear to be the exact same version, I'd have to check . . . but if the one in the system dir matches K-M's I imagine it'd work.

I always run with JS/Flash off and enable as req'd. And hope it doesn't crash. I believe K-M is in fact now my most current browser. :-) So the fatness is forgiveable. ;-) Just a touch unexpected. <g>

Well you know fat is slang for good from the 80's. :-)

> Opera is AFAIK packed with an Exe packer. You could do the same for Firefox...
IE 6 has installed many outer components in other directories.
Get its installer and look at its size.

Opera's exe is 800K vs KM's 500. Yeah, IE has its tentacles spread through Windows :-) I just ignore IE now and hope it stays dormant. I've figured a few tricks over the years to keep it so too. <g>

FF 1.5 only has NoScript, I borfed the rest. I don't actually know what KM 1.5 can do that FF 1.5 might not. I don't study browser software before I use it, I just dive in!

No skins for me, so I don't know.

Last time I checked the memeory usage on a program it went like this:

C:\DOS> mem

Free RAM 606KB
etc. ;-)

The "new" title made me curious so I timed http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/formel-1-606153.html
using Opera 10.54, K-M 1.5 and FireFox 1.5 on it. Caches clear on exit is default so that's not a factor.

3. Opera 13.69s
2. K-M 11.61 s
1. FireFox 9.07s

Surprised? I was.

Disclaimer: as with any such test I probably overlooked something that may have had a major effect. But hey as an unscientific test of "real life" it certainly is valid because it _is_ how long it took (for my browsers on my computer). :-)

Actually I should not be surprised, I can "feel" FF's speed. And in spite of being dated 2007 FF displays pages as well as the 2010 ones.

p.s. tried IMDB main page and oh well, should'a known it.

3. FF 12s
2. Opera 10s
1. K-M 8s

Your mileage may vary. Let's call it a tie. ;-)

K-meleon fast?

Firefox 7.0a2 aurora loads some web sites faster than K-meleon on my XP/Vista computers. FF7 seems to have some RAM usage improvements.
