win98, km 8.2.
I'm doing speed test here

and km opens download.dat instead of saving.
I suspected mimeTypes.rdf, so I made it 0, doesn't help.
Any suggestions?

Opens with what?

k-m himself uses mimeTypes.rdf, which You already tried!
(hopefully the one in (active) Profiles/default?

the other is that some systems use system default to open right after or at
download which can be conveniently reset to nothing e . g. with jv16 tools.
(else You right click on it and associate it with k-m and later back to where it is now)

(but You associated the extension dat with a program at the first place
- so i do not recommend doing dat for a mere test - You could e.g . download k-mbeta3.exe from jsnj´s post that will be more usefull than a mere 20 mb dummy dat and tell You Your conection speed as well // and k-m will certainly not open an exe )

download.dat opens in km window.
Its very strange, because .dat files are associated with notepad, and data files in the system opens with notepad properly, but that one opens with km.
Could you or somebody else confirm that?
About dat versus exe. All speed test sites on the net are unreliable. You need to download large file, 20-100 Meg, and theres not too many exe files that size.
Speed test sites are using routinely 1Meg file, which is not sufficient.
