This IS ludicrous: banned word: < followed by a
Posted by: SoerenB

Hi,

it just took me a while -way too long- to find out, that

<a

like in:
<a href=

is a banned word. So no way to post a few lines of harmless html if you don't bother to find out and/or don't know the trick.

Admins, please take this as a formal protest against this single item on the list.

Cheers
SoerenB

It's usual that in php forums you can't post HTML code.
But could exist some rule to avoid banned words in formatted code.

Every forum is different, but I'm not sure if usually html-code really can't be posted. In another forum I'm in it can very well be posted, it just appears as normal text in a post... It doesn't work as code, but it's not banned, because it doesn't work anyway.
But banning all words that contain anywhere "ugg", like suggestion, is definitely more than strange...

I am sure You all remember the automated spam floods generated by bots and that they were stopped somehow. Some scripts can only be stopped by banning parts of the code used normally.

One mentioned string was banned by Dorian and is the key to our spam defence.
I know by chance since I asked him.

Lets finish this thread. I asked Soeren by mail whether I can delete it.
Since several used this thread by now. I ask You (all) the same.

I'd think it better to keep this thread just for information *why* this doesn't work, because "suggest" and "struggle" etc. are very frequent words and posters will need a lot of time and struggling to figure out that *this* one is considered so dangerous here!
And most will just give up instead and think they simply are forbidden to post at all here.

Uhm, and if that "key" word happened to be "ugg", could you please ask him if it would perhaps work to include at least a blank?? Like banning only " ugg" and "ugg ", not as frequent words as "suggest" and "struggle" and...

Hi,

I just had an idea, not sure if it's any good:

Why not have a Sticky in "General", with a title like:

oBoAoNoNoEoDo oWoOoRoDoSo

(or so, just to convey the idea)

The only content of that should be a screenshot of a list of those b-words a regular human benevolent user might want to use now and then ...

Maybe some bending and warping could be applied to the list before capturing ...

Any comments?

Cheers

siria, i deleted the string "Realugg" which seems related to the error You marked red. It seems that the Phorum software applies this banned string wrongly. It should not use the last 3 letters but the whole string sad smiley

Hope this helps.

If You find other strings that cause trouble You can directly mail me, that is easier smiling smiley

p.s. I will definitely not alter anything - that I know is from Dorian.
That much about "a...". Here also the Phorum software applies a longer string to a part of it. sad smiley

And I am not going to post detailed lists to tutor spammers.

Whoa that's kinda bug*gy... Phorum takes only little parts of banned words and then bans this in other words too?! :O
Hmm... perhaps there's yet another setting for this behaviour (just hoping...)
At the moment the bad u-g-g words are still banned, perhaps it doesn't work instantly...
Anyway, Thanx Guenter!! And Thanx also to Soeren for figuring this out and insisting :-)

another "banned" word is "d e b u g g e r" (w/out the spaces in that d-word)
why can't I use that word? Even hyperlinks that mention that "D" word get banned as well. sad smiley

needs fixing or improvement.

A quick word before thread deletion...

U-G-G words are all still banned:

strug gle
bug gy
debug ger
sug gest (-ion -ed)
jug gle (-ed)
rug ged
jug gernaut
hug ger
mug ger
chug ger
lug ger

The U-G-G string is definitely the culprit (banned by itself and within any word) and needs to be removed from the ban list.

Apart from the string mentioned and removed by Guenter I'd have suspected it was all about banning all forms of "bug ger" (-y -ed), which are considered vulgar.

I wonder if it has to do with the "real" in it, which is an own word... perhaps that banning automatic somehow thinks this was two words... then again, there's no ban an "real"... And nothing has changed since, so there must be some other word causing this...

Not wrong any more, I told You that I deleted it. grinning smiley

proof: mugger

Realugg was part of an URL that had been used in an automated attack.
ugg was never itself part of the ban list.

I think some changes need some time to take effect. sad smiley
