Problem with Adblock

Hi

i have a strange problem with adblock

from time to time i get a pop-up-message that a new version is available.
but if i cancel this message my K-meleon isn't the same as before

all bookmarks are gone, all my defined searches too and i get the default skin.
To solve this problem i have to restore my folders. lucky me i save them automatically every day

i haven't found any options to stop Adblock from looking for updates.
are there any possibilities to fix that?

thx

What K-Meleon version and Adblock version are you using?
I didn't found any preference about Adblock update in Adblock's preferences, are you refering to "Update subscriptions"?

i use
K-meleon 1.5.4
Adblock Plus 1.0.2

i could not find anything about Adblock update either

i just get Update subscriptions for my filter list but i don't think that caused the problem.

The message always says that there is new version of adblock.
Sometimes it takes a month or longer to get this message again.

but whether i click "ok" or "cancel" K-meleon changes

That is strange. Do you also loose the AB+ subscrription filter or personal filters?

Hi,

the "Uninstalling Adblock Plus" how-to says:
Quote

Note that deactivating Adblock Plus plugin will only remove it from the user interface, usually the extension will continue blocking in the background. To uninstall Adblock Plus you need to remove all the files you installed with the ZIP package.

Note: This is talking about the PLUGIN. I don't know what just unticking the Macro Extension and leaving the plugin active will do.

My best advice comes in a new topic I'll open in "Improvement Requests"

PS: next time, install the AdBlockPlus 1.0.1 from
here

Cheers

The macro builds K-Meleon menue items "Ad&block Plus..." and "adblockplus(Preferences), that are not in ./chrome/adblockplus.jar. The plugin adds adblock to the user interface.

The file ./components/nsAdblockPlus.js has AFAIK the functionality that continues to work after You deactivate the adblockplus.dll and the adblockplus.kmm. K-Meleon has no mechanism to deactivate it or any other object in components. Just renaming to "nsAdblockPlus.js1" or so is sufficiant to deactivate it, maybe You can add that to a macro or extension.

What is the advantage of installing the older version of AdBlockPlus?

- well, I AM positive it works here, on XP SP3 & KM 1.54, without any update notification - that's the only reason - and worth a try if you want the issue solved, IMMHO.

What I forgot to mention: when installing, read: "i was referred to this page because an extension contains component files." from the faqs, because it does.

PS have you read "A Routine for Newbie Problems instead of "create a new Profile""?

A few more bugs.

Adblock Plus doesn't show any kind of update messages in K-Meleon. Whatever message you are seeing - it is not Adblock Plus. Typing the exact message text into Google should help.

Does this version work normally? There has been problems with the last version Wladimir put out.

we'll have to wait for a response from desga2, guenter or forever to really answer that one, panzer.

since I'm using KM 1.6a4, ABP won't work with that version so I can't tell you if the revised ABP for KM will work as normal.

The kplugin has been improved but seems to have errors still.

The rest of the plugin was always ok.

p.s. guenter does not know really - he only uses the plugin when he is in the Net with a portable USB stick that has limited bandwidth. But that is on a 3 GB RAM machine where it does not matter if the kplugin bleeds a little. As long as it cuts out some adds...

Anyway I have added all exceptions that I wanted to have on my most used pages.
You only need the kplugin for that. The ad blocking functionality works without it.

disrupted used the same adblock core by Wladimir Palant.
But he tries not to use the kplugin.

The leak is in the kplugin.

But IMHO the kplugin is fit & save for use. I do not understand the exitement.

The kplugin part is needed e.g. to add exceptions and change settings but not constantly and not for the adblocking itself.

The kplugin can be deactivated independently via F2 K-Meleon Plugins (needs restart to de/activate).

If You do not want to deactivate. Restart the browser once in a while.
AFAIK that frees the RAM again smiling smiley

Guenter,

I went for disrupted's solution, as KM on my 768 ram Pentium M machine needs all the ram it can get and stays on a lot of the time. So when I ran Process Explorer to try and replicate the findings, I was not happy.

As I don't use the exceptions thing, just let the easy list do its thing, I am perfectly happy with the limitations of disabling the kplugin. Just my way of doing it.
