The Best Independent Browser - K-Meleon needs your vote

Quote

The Best Independent Browser category accepted nominations for any Web browsers not considered to be mainstream (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.). Independent browsers are normally developed by smaller development companies or individual developers. They are usually not created to compete directly with the "big boys", but rather to focus on niche markets.

The five finalists range from a browser centered around social networking to an old favorite of Mac users.

Apparently the poll page link varies every day.

Click > http://webdesign.about.com/od/awards/qt/readers-choice-2010-all-participants.htm and choose Best Independent Browser.

camino should not be on the list because it isn't an independent browser. it's a great browser and the best gecko for macs osx(cocoa lib),true it started as an independent project(chimera) but mozilla adopted it and that was a decade ago

I had a look at the results so far for the poll of the 'Big Boys' too smiling smiley I'm so glad to see Chrome pick up a similar number of votes as IE8 smiling smiley I don't know how popular these Reader's Choice awards are but I think Google should scrap that browser project altogether smiling smiley From the choice of independent browsers it's a no-brainer really smiling smiley

I think K-Meleon wins as the best independent browser!

I had never heard of Flashpeak before & I had a look at their site. I checked it out in Firefox as well just to see what McAfee's Site Advisor did; it turned an amber colour & warned that some people had reported some potentially unwanted programs with some downloads.

Cool, but what if that's just some people casting multiple votes, repeatedly? I'm telling myself that this would probably go for fans of all the choices there, but in general am a little cautious with such no-login votes ;-)

I think it's a distinct possibility that people may be casting multiple votes but in my opinion the figures seem about right. Camino is a Mac browser & thus a smaller user base, Maxthon is fairly popular but I don't know many people who actually admit to using it. As for Flock, I had a bad experience with it once & will never download it again. I know it has its fans but I thought it was highly unstable. As far as I could see it was just Firefox on steroids & I'm not a huge fan of Firefox these days anyway. I like SeaMonkey but I am having the same Ajax scripting problems with it as I am with Firefox. K-Meleon is just the best Gecko-engined browser in my opinion, even if its rendering engine version is a little out of date.

Ah! I know it under the name Slim Browser. This Flashpeak was added later.

Along with Green Browser it has the biggest array of features (those needeed + those not needed) you can imagine.

I've heard of the 'Green Browser'. Are either of them any better than K-Meleon?

I used Green Browser for a day or two. But they are based on IE engine so ... grinning smiley

It would be good if someone would check all their features and implement the ones missing in Km (and useful) - if there are any. grinning smiley

All I know is that they are based on the Trident layout engine, which is enough for me not to use them LOL! :s

What features does the 'Green Browser' have that KM could need?

Davesk,

Avant, Maxthon, Green Browser... all shells for IE (6/7/8). I personally use Maxthon Classic (1.6.xx). As for what they add that KM doesn't have? I would reverse that question and say that they don't have any macros and are not configurable at all in the way that KM is. I mean, you can click on their Options/Preferences buttons and include or remove their set of features, but you can't write your own macros, modify other people's macros, ask for a macro to be written that fits your own particular needs and get it almost immediately (or be told it is impossible) because the architecture of KM is fairly unique: it is a scripting language designed specifically for tinkering by those who like to do that kind of thing or by those end users who can use the toys made by others who like K-Meleon.

(just my two cents)

OK, thanks for the info. I know Maxthon is quite popular. Avant has a lot of fans as well. I'm just not a huge fan of the Trident engine I reckon. I downloaded Sleipnir once but I wasn't overly impressed with it.

Daveski,

I've tried most of the shells and in the end, went back to the original made popular by that VP at MicroSoft who admitted to using it: Maxthon.

Maxthon 3 looks interesting ~

Maxthon's upcoming major version, 3.0, currently under alpha testing, will support two engines, Trident and Webkit.[9] Information and pictures of the new version have been released, showing that the browser will be able to quickly switch between several browsing modes, offering greater speed or standard compliance. The new version is also said to score 100/100 on the Acid 3 standard compliance test.[10][11] ~ Wikipedia

Looks like some have no help forums to post.

Opera or K-Meleon have less users than Firefox or Maxton smiling smiley
