Privacy Bar: To display or not display?
Date: January 17, 2010 01:34PM
I just wondered if anyone has the KM
Privacy bar permanently on display on their toolbar or do you keep it hidden?
I have dragged mine next to the menu bar & in-between that & the tab buttons & throbber. This way it doesn't add to the height of the GUI. I find that the User Agent, Kill Flash & JavaScript buttons are easily displayed & more functional. I can see everything
at a glance. It is easy to accidentally hit
Clear All instead of
Kill Flash if you aren't paying attention though!
So, do you show or do you hide?

Mines hidden & just use the menu (Tools, Privacy, clear Data, clear all) when I need to
I'm a minimalist & detest toolbars taking up my browsing screen space

Yeah, I can agree with that. That's why I dragged it next to the menu bar. It doesn't take any more screen space that way. It looks kinda 'techie' & makes me think I'm clever (or look like a nerd). Even though I'm not that clever! LOL

I don't display it. I found that the only thing I used often was Javascript, so I made a button to toggle my default in Policy Manager from Javascript on to Javascript off. All I see is a small flag next to the throbber that is either red (on) or green (off). I have two policies with sites requiring Javascript and sites where Javascript allows too much popups and add. This means I have an exception list for either red or green.

It looks like I'm in the minority here.

That sounds like an elegant solution. I often surf with the JS toggled 'off'. I usually forget to turn it back on when I am in mail! So being able to graphically see it is a plus.

You can hide this buttons in toolbars.cfg on your skin (Edit -> Configuration -> Toolbars), only comented the button lines that you don't like, example:
# %ifplugin macros & privacy
# Clear All{
# macros(kPrivacy_ClearAll)
# Clear All
# privhot.bmp[13]
# privcold.bmp[13]
# }
# %endif
Usually hide for me.

I always use the bar but sometimes comment out items.
Currently I use default condition; A screenshot of my used toolbars.

I take it you use the privacy buttons often?
Often enough to warrant it to be easily accesable at a click of a button.
I don't use it often so prefer it dedicated to tabs personally

OK desga2, thanks for the info.
I tried it but it wouldn't save. I have had similar problems with notepad & SRWare Iron's adblocker. I'll probably have to disable the UAC (Vista) temporarily. That normally does the trick with Iron's adblock list which is saved on Notepad also.
EDIT: It worked after I disabled the UAC while I 'commented out' some of the buttons.

Haven't seen that skin in awhile
It's an old skin I ported for KM v0.9 called Knoia Warm. I think Guenter updated the toolbars.cfg file to work with KM 1.5. Below is the link to the old skin. I think the updated version is on alain's extension site. Not sure though. Guenter probably has a copy.

It's very subtle & has a lot of class I think.

I included the old screenshot link above. Encoderx's background looks like a Windows 7 theme.

Yeah it's that one - I've used the others but IMO this ones got small icons & doesn't look too colourful & 'childish'
You can actually put a background picture behind it as I've done that in the past
It's on my XP Pro 2008 desktop.
I just have Bookmarks, Privacy & Mail & News toolbars unused & moved the icons, url & menus onto the top layer & use the second layer for tabs as I use tabs greatly
Love, love, love this theme by far

2 Sizes of Knoia Warm are part of this archive of updated old sins.
The archive is an environment with which skin creators can build 1.5 code skin installers to update their posts. It was originally only created for this purpose.
Many skins are abandon-wares now. So i changed its purpose.
It can be downloaded by any users that are looking for updated old skins.
And thx jsnj for porting this skin (and many others).

Well Guenter, it looks like you & me are in the minority for keeping the privacy bar displayed! I think it is quite useful if you customise it a bit by commenting out the buttons you don't want.

Re: Privacy Bar: To display or not display?

My privacy bar is always on, I use it daily, often multiple times per day. However, I reduced it to five buttons (for now) and changed it's appearance entirely on the first day I began using it, quickly hacking it up to reduce the button width and change the look. It's not pretty or complete but it has served me well...
(animated image)
I click the
block images button most of all (for fast page loading on dialup), and I attached the
image permissions dialog to it as the right-click option. Similarly, I attached
cookie permissions to the
block cookies button,
view cookies to the
clear cookies button and
popup permissions to the
block popups button (such logical options should be built in to future KM versions). I toggle javascript a lot too, and like others have said recently, it's nice to have a visual confirmation of these settings. I also attached the whole privacy menu as the right-click option on my stop button, for easy access to everything else (for the inexperienced, I documented how to make many of these changes
HERE).
For me, K-Meleon wouldn't be K-Meleon without the privacy bar, cheers to
jsnj for creating it for us!

That's clever Doon. I agree with you, the Privacy Bar is surprisingly useful, especially as it can be customised (in Config) quite easily even by me! LOL
It was an excellent creation jsnj!

I show my privacy bar, but with only the essentials that I like to use: Java, Javascript, Popups, Cache, History and URLBar. Using Early Blue as my theme, I manage to use KM with only two toolbars; File, Edit, etc. and a second row with all the icons I use, including the Privacy Bar ones.
