Thank you for your replies, disrupted. The video settings you suggested did not seem to affect the situation. but I do find it interesting that Siria and I both have ATI cards (different cards with different drivers), and I wonder about Mr. Lapin now - it's unclear to me what brand of accelerated video he may be running. So far, Win98/SE (siria, lapin and me) and ATI video cards (siria and me) are common to the issue. Siria, I think you are right about updated drivers being the likely fix to your situation.
disabling aching icons should stop kmeleon from downloading them.. i find it very strange it isn't working and this itself is a bug because if you disable caching favicons it must not download them not just not display them.
They are displayed no matter the settings, and some data relating to them can be found in the IconCache.dat after K-Meleon is closed (IconCache.dat doesn't exist as a file while K-Meleon is running, and the data in IconCache.dat will be overwritten each time K-Meleon is started, when caching is disabled). I am certain that the freezing does occur at the moment the favicon is displayed (a slow dialup connection provides bullet-time reflexes as pages load).
also some of the sites no longer use real icons for favicons to get over colour limitations or shadows etc..they use gif or png and even sometimes rename ext to ico to fool some browsers.. maybe this causes some kind of a messup in the iconcache data file.
Good work on the PNG analysis. When first researching the matter I determined that some of the problem icons were PNG, but I also found many PNG favicons that didn't cause a problem. While digging into the problem again recently I made an exhaustive study of all of the problem icons and they are indeed all PNG, and the origins of at least four of them can be traced to the same software - Adobe ImageReady. This seems significant, and to me this confirms my early suspicion that "perhaps the answer lies in the image files themselves, bad headers or odd construction that somehow throws off the KM routines". Here's a neat bit of freeware, PNG Analyzer Known sites that can trigger the freeze: Links I've discovered: http://kmeleon.geckoworld.ru (now that's almost funny) http://www.cgtextures.com http://www.foodnetwork.com http://am-productions.biz http://www.annoyances.org http://www.astraware.com Link submitted by Mr. Lapin: http://greenevillesun.com Link submitted by siria: http://www.tuchlaube.ch Image files: http://kmeleon.geckoworld.ru/images/main/icon.png http://www.cgtextures.com/favicon.png http://images.foodnetwork.com/webfood/fn20/imgs/favicon.png http://am-productions.biz/images/am.png http://www.annoyances.org/pictures/toad.png http://www.astraware.com/images/icon.png http://www.greenevillesun.com/images/favico.ico http://www.tuchlaube.ch/@@/favicon.png Note: I stated in another thread (crash/cache) that I'd be deleting K-Meleon, but I couldn't bring myself to do so, I like this pesky browser too much now!
