I originally installed K-meleon 1.5.1 on a Win 95 machine because it offerred higher security & encryption than old Outlook Express 5 browser, even on dated OS.  It has worked beautifully for years, accessing secure sites.  I decided to upgrade to 1.5.4 because there is one site I need to communicate with my physician that 1.5.1 cannot get onto.  However, when I installed 1.5.4 over 1.5.1, I get an error message that SSL is turned off and I need to check that my directories aren't read-only write-protected.  Well, I checked all the directories for such status, and they're all read/write.

I tried uninstalling the new 1.5.4 and then erasing everything in the K-meleon directories, too.  Then I reinstalled 1.5.4 clean.  Still same problem.  Plus any separate program files I may've installed to make 1.5.1 work are gone.  I cannot now even access secure sites I could with 1.5.1, although the browser seems to be working fine otherwise.  (Well, there are some tiny font display issues; but they're not as important as getting SSL to work properly.)

I cannot find anyplace in the browser menus and screens to enable SSL.  There is an "edit privacy" configuration page with all sorts of complex code and a warning not to tamper ignorantly with it.  (I'm not stupid, but I am ignorant of what to do.)  I can find documentation that says I need to make this change, but not one word about how to do so.  I hope somebody knowledgeable will read this and help.

The only way I can contact my doctor through his practice-provided system now is to get in my car and go to a public library or a restaurant with WI-FI and use my laptop.  At home my only Internet connection is the Win95 machine with dial-up through modem.  K-meleon 1.5.1 had been my way to get onto most secure sites, but now I've lost that access without gaining the access I need.
