i found a good link on comet's site for this video player: http://www.mpcstar.com/ it's similar to vlc.. comes with own codecs and doesn't need directx, has a nice simple interface like old wmp or mpc.. it seems stable, will have to test out it more (especially with qt formats like 3gp which vlc normally has issues with)
mpcstar wasn't able to properly render all qt formats including .mov and had issues with audio too.. though it does come with codecs, it's not like vlc in anyway.. where the latter uses own compiled codecs; mpcstar just uses the regular directshow codecs and containers but without the need to register them to the system.. just placing them in its codecs folder enables it to read them.. it should have been able to play qt formats because it comes with a quicktime alternative version but that didn't work as it should although it was able to play real formats with its real alternative. it didn't have problems with vorbis, matroska and other regular formats. it can be very useful when testing out codecs before registering them and it might also be good with recent codecs that cannot be registered/supported on win9x.. but that still needs to be tested. furthermore, the interface/skin had a small bug that causes button flickering when moving the player when a video is in play. vlc videolan player is still the best non-directx player with mplayer a close second/ and when it comes to directx players.. i don't think there's a match for cinemaplayer http://www.cinemaplayer.net/
