IE 6 has installed many outer components in other directories. 
Get its installer and look at its size.

Firefox/Mozilla/K-Meleon GREs have grown over the versions. 
Easy to see if You get e.g. the Firefox Nostalgia Pack & compare the installers.

Firefox joins the individual dll of ./components into the exe (till version2 / they call it static) or link them into the Xul.dll (3-4+). Up, it saves a few kb overhead for each dll. Down, You always load the whole lot. That even loads the componrnts used by the mail (thunderbird) only. The later has AFAIK the same GRE as Firefox.

All recent official K-Meleon discard about 1.3 MB ./components files but keep the dll & xpt shared/separate.

How many extensions do You have install into Firefox 1.5 or 2 to get the same functionality as K-Meleons 1.0-1.5.4 ship out of the box? What is the size of these extensions when installed?

K-Meleon ships e.g. 3 skins not one like Firefox 2 which has about the same size when installed... What is the size of an installed additional Firefox Skin?
Only the used K-Meleon skin is loaded.

Did You check with a reliable tool what sizes the browsers have in RAM when they load pages?[/quote]
