Hi

I am now in K-Meleon 1.5.4 using Wine 1.1.43-i486 in Archpup-1204, a new mini (78 MB) live distro from the Puppy Linux family based in this case on Arch Linux stuff having no preinstalled browser.

Exceptionnaly, K-Meleon works really very well in Linux, the pages are good and fast. ebay works, the Puppy Linux forum works, this forum works etc.
youtube.com refuses this browser.
http://france2.fr/jt/20h doesn't work probably because no flashplayer.
I did download and install it with the Adobe installer. nothing to do.

What is the solution?

Kind regards

Linux live distro for netbooks (21 replies)

Linux live distro for netbooks

Low-priced netbooks have often only 1 Gb of ram.
This makes them difficult to use with many
Linux distros from USB as live systems, working
in ram only, either because they are too big or
too old, when used with wireless LAN.
The new version of Peppermint Two could be a
working possibility.
It is based on the current Ubuntu 11.04, or
to be more precise, on Linux Mint 11 with the
Lubuntu desktop LXDE.
The size of the distro for 32 bit is only 442 MB.
The needed Office applications and other needed
programs can be installed easily as the case arises
using the Synaptic apps manager.
Besides that, the distro is optimally prepared
for cloud computing, if this is wanted, using
the Ice SSB application.

Download from here :

http://peppermintos.info/dl1/Peppermint-Two-i386-06052011.iso

and burn the iso to a CD. Do not simply copy it there,
but use the special menu entry command for burning
an iso file in your CD burning program.

Start the cd as a live distro in ram on your desktop computer.
When the desktop comes up, start Synaptic in the menu
System Tools and search for usb-creator.
Mark for installation:
usb-creator-common and usb-creator-gtk
and press Apply.
There will be a new menu entry "StartupDiskCreator"
in the menu System Tools.
Use it to create a bootable USB stick.
On small sticks there will one single partition be
created, on bigger sticks, a second partition for a
persistent home folder is possible.
Make sure that only one stick is in use, to avoid
erasing any unwanted files. Check also the size
of the stick.
The bootable stick with Peppermint should be
ready in only a couple of minutes.
It can then be used to start Linux in ram only
without harddisk installation on your netbook.
If it should only boot Windows, and show no
boot screen, the necessary F key, for example F12
(depending on the netbook brand) must be pressed
when booting.
If the boot menu does not show an entry for the
USB drive, this should be enabled changing the
boot menu, often by pressing F2, when booting
(depending on the netbook brand).

P.S.
For office purposes, Abiword and Gnumeric, which
are normally sized programs, are often sufficient.
If you really need the huge OpenOffice (now LibreOffice),
it is advisable downloading the install debs only
using Synaptic, and transfer them from the folder
/var/cache/apt/archives to a folder on a second USB stick,
to save ram space, and install them from there, writing
in the LX-terminal

sudo dpkg -i -R --force-depends /path-to-the-USB-folder

You can do that in a similar way for many other apps.

You can of course use K-Meleon as your browser after installing
wine with Synaptic. Simply copy it to tha USB stick and
add the necessary dll runtimes into the main K-Meleon folder.
For 1.5 versions these are mfc71u.dll, msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll .
For 1.6 versions download and install MSvce8dist.exe from

http://jujuland.pagesperso-orange.fr/

Install it with

wine /your-path-to/MSvce8dist.exe

Start K-Meleon with

wine /your-path-to-K-Meleon-folder/k-meleon.exe

(or sometimes K-Meleon.exe in some versions, because in
Linux capital letters are recognized as such).
This command can of course be added to the start menu.
development, with kernel 2.6.27 in version 6.1.12 , and
is listed as "dormant" on the Distrowatch site, it
may be noteworthy for interested people, that a Slax fork
available now.
It's named Porteus (former Slax-Remix).

As Flash 10 has a critical, unfixed bug,
Gnash 0.8.8 can replace it in Linux for YouTube
and Googlevideo, while most other Flash
sites and news streaming in Flash do not work yet,
because their providers only accept Adobe Flash
for the moment.
Gnash 0.8.8 and "browser-gnash-plugin" for Mozilla
are already in the Debian sid repository.
For Ubuntu Lucid it is not yet available, but
the Debian sid main repository could be added.
The file libgnutls.so.13 would have to be
added manually from the Hardy repository, because
it is not in Lucid anymore. A downloaded
deb for it could be extracted with

dpkg-deb --extract file.deb /PathtoTemporaryDir

and the extracted lib file renamed to simple
libgnutls.so.13 before copying it to /usr/lib/ .
The file "libgnashplugin.so" would have to be copied
from /usr/lib/gnash to $HOME/.mozilla/plugins/
and "libflashplayer.so" moved temporarily to
another place, because else Adobe Flash would
always be preferred by the browser.
Check if the user rights for $HOME are still
the correct ones, if not, correct that.
The start of the first flash movie could
take a while, but then it should work correctly.
I have not yet tried this with other distros,
but basically it should be possible too for them
in a similar way, to test Gnash, which can be
an alternative for Linux browsers from now on,
as soon as all flash providers will accept that.
You should only try to test it, if you are
experienced and you know what you're doing,
in order not to ruin your system, or else test it
with a live cd.

A rolling release means a continuously developing software system,
while most Linux distros have versions, that will be
replaced by new versions regularly, mostly about twice a year.
Rolling releases based on the Debian repositories on
live CD or live DVD are

Aptosid, which replaced the former Sidux, which is using
Debian "Sid", look at

http://distrowatch.com/index.php?distribution=aptosid

an upcoming new release has been announced:http://aptosid.com

and the new Linux Mint Debian, based on Debian "Testing", at

http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=66

"Sid" and "Testing" are the branches of Debian containing
more recent software developments, which are not in the
so-called "Stable" branch of Debian yet. Debian is the
base of many other distros like Ubuntu or Mint.
Security updates in Debian are generally not made by
installing newer software versions, but by fixing the
bugs in the existing older versions. This does also
include browsers like iceweasel and iceape (renamed from
Firefox and Seamonkey) or iceape (Thunderbird).
Fixing the bugs of the older versions instead of using
new versions is supposed to increase the stability
of the Linux system.
May be worth to have a look at, if you want something
a bit different from the usual path.

Usually Flash 10 should work in most Linux distros.
Installing version 10.1.53.64 is now advisable.

Flashplayer 9 in Linux is only necessary for distros with libc version < 2.4 .

For flashplayer 9.0.277.0 for Linux here the download address,
because it's hard to find :

from the site : http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
download "Linux Flash Player 9 Plugin content debugger"
or the direct link :
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/updaters/9/flashplayer_9_plugin_debug.tar.gz

If Flashplayer 10 does not work, watch if liblcms.so.1 is present in
/usr/lib/ , if it is not you can add it.
It is for example in
liblcms1_1.18.dfsg-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
for Ubuntu and its derivatives, or in
liblcms1_1.17.dfsg-1+lenny2_i386.deb
for Debian.
If you should want liblcms.so.1 alone, you can unpack the .deb
using the program "alien" to make a tar.gz with the command
alien -tc FILE
and unpack then the tar.gz package.
For distros using .rpm packages,
look here :
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/3/srodzaj/1/search/liblcms.so.1
Alien would also unpack .rpm's.
Currently I am "playing with" Linux Mint 8 'Helena' on my 320 G partitioned HDD.
The other partition is Windows XP SP2.
I'm getting tired of Windows' security problems: malware, adware, viruses, etc. Plus the increased cost of upgrading to Windows 7 will entail at least 2 new family computers due to the hardware requirements for this "new" Windows. Thus far Linux Mint is doing very nicely and is well on its way to becoming out main OS.

After almost two years since the last DVD version 5.1
the live DVD Knoppix 6.2 has been released.
Version 6.1 was only available as an add-on to a
Linux magazine and could not be downloaded.
The Knoppix 6.2 DVD contains Gnome as well as KDE and
a great number of applications working with these
window managers. It is a show-case of Linux programs.
There is a script included to install the distro
on a USB stick of 4 or better more Gb.
There is also a Knoppix Live CD downloadable,
faster, but with fewer programs of course.
For more info go to distrowatch.com or to the English
branch of the Heise Forum, here :
http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/Knoppix-6-2-arrives-862612.html
or to the release announcement, here :
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/knoppix62-en.html .

There are also several other new distros, which follow
the half year release cycle downloadable now, as
Suse 11.2 , Fedora 12 , Ubuntu 9.10 Koala and its
derivatives Kubuntu and Xubuntu, Linux Mint 8 (RC),
Mandriva 2010, PC Linos 2009.2 , Mepis 8.0.12 ,
just to mention the biggest ones .
These distros come usually as Live CDs, and are installable,
if they become the first choice.
Download addresses at distrowatch.com .

As I was testing the non-unicode 1.53 version, since a long time without arriving to locate the bug which crashes K-Meleon, the wine developpers ask me some debug info to help debugging.

I asked to Dorian, and he send me some files, and I installed the unicode exe version to test it.

Incredible, this version seems not to crash anymore. My thoughts about the unicode problems were dated from 1.5.2 version, and I never test 1.5.3 unicode.

No crash when starting as 1.5.2, and it seems to be ok a long time. No crash since an hour about what was impossible with non-unicode version.

Another good new, the URL history gives no more error message and seems to work correctly.

I think it will be necessary to continue to test, but it a good new.

To test it, install 1.5.3 with setup for example, open then the setup with 7-zip and extract K-Meleon.exe (overwrite the non-unicode version, or rename it before), or instead of setup, use 7-Zip package.

Report here if it's ok for you.

I'm using wine 1.1.30 and Ubuntu 8.10

[edit]

Grrr... a crash just after the send of the post. It ought to be too nice ...

Welcome to all Linux users !

The links to my unofficial variations that I use
in Linux with wine can be found on the page for
unofficial variations, here:

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/UKmeleon

In addition there is a recent variation based on
the latest Firefox 3.5.3, which can be downloaded
from here :

http://two.xthost.info/eichhein4/K-Meleon-F353.zip

Note that these variations are not native Linux
apps. They need the emulator wine installed in the
Linux distro, and some additional dlls, that are
mentioned in the variation notes. If you don't
have them, look for them in the Internet.

The official current version may also work for you,
sometimes some work-arounds will be necessary.
Don't expect that everything will work as in Windows,
but the necessary functions should work allright,
and the speed and versatility in Linux is better than of
some other browsers.

Regards and good luck for K-Meleon in Linux.

updated variation: K-Meleon-NX-18123 (2 replies)

I have uploaded a new updated unofficial no-Xul version :
K-Meleon-NX-18123 .
This is a simplified version of K-Meleon 1.x ,
usable in Linux together with wine , or also in Windows,
updated to Mozilla 1.8.1.24pre using Gecko/20090820,
from Seamonkey Nightly GRE.
Look and feel are similar to the earlier 0.9 versions.
The NX No-chrome concept is used here. Thanks to Hao Jiang and Dorian.
The browser is very fast, because Xul is not used.
Note :
This version works only if you have the files msvcp71.dll
and msvcr71.dll in your system or in your K-Meleon folder.
If you want to use Internet Explorer Favorites, mfc71.dll
would also be necessary (in Windows XP and Vista probably
all already in the system) .
If you need these dll's, look for them in the internet .
If necessary in Linux, copy the files manually to the K-Meleon main folder.
Compreg.dat and xpti.dat included to make it work in Vista.
Note : Flashblock, Aggreg8 and other extensions are not included in this
no-chrome version, and cannot be installed, because extensions need Xul.
Ad-blocking by userContent.css and hostperm.1 .
Many useful search engines have been added.
The profiles folder will be created inside the K-Meleon main folder by default.
If, when in Linux, you want this folder inside the wine configuration directory
because of property rights problems, rename the file profile.ini
inside the K-Meleon main folder to for example profile.ini-renamed
before the first start.
A javascript button has been included. After changing permissions
for javascript, reload the page.
History must be deleted manually.

Download as zip file at :

http://one.xthost.info/eichhein/K-Meleon-NX-18123.zip
