  • 32 MB RAM minimum recommended
  • 5 MB of free hard drive space for download. 11 MB of free hard disk space for full installation.

Windows DLLs

The dlls shipped with Windows are improved and enhanced with each version. Users of older Windows versions, Windows 95/98 and Windows NT, might have to update some dlls to run K-Meleon.

  • K-Meleon is written by using Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC42.dll).
  • The user interface of K-Meleon uses components available in Microsoft's Common Control Library (ComCtl32.dll). If you are not have Internet Explorer 5, you may need this file.

Installation Notes

  1. If you have previously installed K-Meleon, make sure to uninstall any previous versions before continuing the installation for this version. Uninstalling the previous version will remove all of the configuration and preference files. If you wish to save these files to use with K-Meleon 0.8, please make a copy of all of the directories under "K-Meleon\Profiles" and save them outside the K-Meleon installation directory before uninstalling K-Meleon.
  2. It is recommended that you exit all programs before running the Setup program.
  3. Double-click on the kmeleon08.exe file to start the Setup process. At any time in the process that you need to stop the K-Meleon installation, click on the Cancel button.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions in the Setup program. Avoid installing K-Meleon 0.8 in the same directory as an older version. When completed, you will be given the option of letting K-Meleon start automatically.
  5. If you wish to use your old configuration and preference files with K-Meleon 0.8, please review the details on Migrating Profiles.

  • K-Meleon has built-in support to run ECMAScript (a.k.a Java Script).

  • Java applets
    • You must first install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to run Java applets in K-Meleon. Once installed, K-Meleon automatically detects your JRE installation and no other configuration is necessary.
    • K-Meleon has been tested with JRE 1.4. You can download JRE 1.4 from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/download.html. To see if JRE is properly installed, type about:plugins in the URL bar. If you see Java Plug-in listed, K-Meleon properly recognizes the JRE.

Internationalization/Multi-Language Support

  • Translated menus and toolbar configuration files are available in the K-Meleon Resource area.

  1. Go to Settings - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Select K-Meleon (remove only).
  3. Click on the Add/Remove or Change/Remove button.
  4. Click on the Uninstall button.
  5. The K-Meleon Uninstall program will prompt you with a confirmation before uninstalling K-Meleon
  6. Click on the Finish button to close out the uninstall program when it is completed.

Known Issues/Problems

  • Error messages related to MFC42.dll on Windows 95/98 or Windows NT are caused by an outdated or missing MFC42.dll. Download and install the Windows Libraries Update from Microsoft:
  • If you save more than one password from the same site, the password manager will not autoload any of the passwords.
  • SSL support allows you to browse to SSL sites. However, if you try to "View" certificates or "Help", the browser may lock up.
  • When viewing web page source from dynamically generated pages, the current source may not match the displayed page.

Browser Display

  • Text and bookmarks menus don't display on Windows95/98 or Windows NT unless this file for Internet Explorer 5.0 or later is installed. Download and install the Common Control Library from Microsoft:
  • The Alt + accelerator (F, E, V, G, H) won't work with the menu bar menus if the rebar menu plugin is enabled. Disable the rebar menu to use the Alt + accelerator key combinations. See How do I enable or disable a K-Meleon plugin? for more details.
  • The menus don't display properly when you are using the Silver theme in Windows XP together with the bitmapped menus plugin from K-Meleon. The current workaround is to disable the Bitmapped menus plugin.
  • Colors don't display properly when monitor resolution is set to 256 colors since Mozilla/Gecko does not provide proper support for 256 colors. See Mozilla Bug #88560
  • A site not displaying properly is normally caused by one of two issues:
    1. The site is not compliant with current HTML standards.
    2. The display problem is due to a Mozilla/Gecko bug.

Mouse wheel scrolling\Multiple mouse buttons

  • Mouse Gesture support is only available through third-party programs, such as StrokeIt.
  • Mouse wheel scrolling does not work with all drivers. If you have problems, try updating your driver or disabling any "helper" programs that your mouse uses.
  • K-Meleon may not recognize secondary control buttons on mice with multiple buttons. If your mouse software permits programming, you may want to try binding those buttons to the respective keyboard commands that K-Meleon uses for navigation.

Third party Plug-ins

  • Most Mozilla-compatible plugins work with K-Meleon. If you already have Mozilla-compatible plugins installed, K-Meleon will detect and use a number of these plugins. You can download Mozilla/Netscape-compatible plugins from Netscape here: http://home.netscape.com/plugins/
  • Shockwave Player will only install if it sees a file named "Netscape.exe". Create a copy of the file kmeleon.exe and rename it to netscape.exe and place it in the same directory as kmeleon.exe. When Shockwave asks for the location of the plugins directory, use the following location:
    \Program Files\K-Meleon\plugins

  • K-Meleon can be configured to work properly with proxies such as Junkbuster that do not support the most recent HTTP specification. By default, K-Meleon tries to use HTTP 1.1. To use K-Meleon with a proxy that only supports HTTP 1.0, change the HTTP version under Edit - Preferences - General.
  • K-Meleon only accepts hostnames for manual proxies.
