If you open an image in its own window and mouse over it, you see this message as a tooltip:

"The image <image path> cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

This seems to be a Mozilla bug, the code that displays the message is in Mozilla gkcontent.dll and the message is in file ImageDocument.properties within embed.jar.
Changing the string in ImageDocument.properties from
InvalidImage=The image \u201c%S\u201d cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
to
InvalidImage=%S
is an effective workaround.

In Mozilla 1.4+ the embed.jar which needs to be changed is locale/en-US/communicator/layout/MediaDocument.properties
The InvalidImage string is the same as before and needs to be InvalidImage=%S
