Whenever creating a new layer in a non-maximized kmeleon window the status bar does not appear until the kmeleon window is either reseized or focus is changed to a different window or layer.

(Remember that "layers" are just ordinary windows, opened in background and kept invisible to give the impression of having a single browser window with several independent views.)
Open in background used to open a window minimized in 0.6.5 build 488. For 0.7 this has changed such that windows open non-minimized in the background and without a statusbar; also with the layers plugin disabled.
I cannot recall any patches from Jeff intended to change the minimized behavior.. but i can have missed it. or it could be a Mozilla issue

Actually, the patches to BrowserViewUtils.cpp (revision 1.19) is labeled "Open in background fix".

Fixed in CVS. Open background windows minimized again.
